Foucher Lebrun is a third generation operation that has been in wine business for over a century, founded in 1921 by the LeBrun-Foucher family. Besides the excellent quality of the vineyards and the organically grown fruit they select, the secret weapon here is that the wines and cuvees are selected by Jean Mounard a very well known former “Fine + Rare” wine merchant from Paris whose palate was formed by years of tasting and selling such wines as DRC, Mouton-Rothchild and Leflaive.
They make a number of wines both red and white — their Touraine Sauvignon Blanc is a great Sancerre alternative, though nothing in my mind compares to their flagship bottling, the Le Mont Sancerre. The grapes for the Sancerre are sourced from the villages of Sancerre, Chavignol (near Mont Damnés) and d’Amigny, an ideal location for aromatic, fresh and bright fruit. Planted on wonderful clay-limestone soil, this Sancerre offers abundance of depth and is expertly balanced. It’s a pleasure now and will be for the next decade plus.

The 2020 Sancerre “Le Mont” from Foucher-Lebrun offers up a deep and complex nose of grapefruit, green apple, fresh-cut grass, a good base of flinty minerality, citrus peel and a hint of petrol in the upper register. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied and shows off fine depth at the core, with good focus and grip, sound framing acids and a long, ripe and nicely balanced finish. This is a touch soft for a 2020 and will want drinking up in its relative youth, but it will provide plenty of pleasure over the next few years. 2021-2024.

Elena Walch’s newly released 2022 Pinot Bianco continues to be the best example of Pinot Blanc anywhere. She’s the undisputed queen. There’s so much energy in this new release. Super light in color, with a busy nose that boasts ripe aromas of citrus, granny smith apple with a hint of freshly mowed grass. Made entirely in stainless steel, the wine is expressive, fresh and finishes as clean and tight as can be. Definitely will continue the run of 90+ scores once this one is reviewed.
Glistening pale yellow-green to the rim, infused with mouth-watering aromas of ripe apple, pear and quince, and crushed almonds with honey and rich creamy middle and a fantastic rush of acidity and minerality that are present throughout. A calling card of Bonhomme’s Vire-Clesse, if you closed your eyes and took a sip, it would have you convinced you were drinking Meursault at least a 3x price tag.
