Dolcetto is an Italian treasure. The wines are amongst the easiest drinking Reds in all of Italy, if not the world. Most are known for their soft balance of fleshy fruits, moderate acids, and an airy lightness that makes them absolutely delicious.
The wines are great and a substantial step up if grown near Alba, but even better near Dogliani, what is considered the eponymous zone and the grand cru of Dolcetto, where in the higher elevations serious wines are being made. Wines of Dogliani are highly complex and sophisticated, and they’re even better at the highest elevations (like today’s from 1100 atop the Einaudi estate).
The major knock against it is that vineyards are under attack, many are being ripped out at a deplorable rate to make way for the much more fashionable Nebbiolo. It doesn’t always ripen well here, but it’s easy to export.
A few of the highest quality growers have banded together in recent years to protect these very special hilltop vineyards. But no one has made a larger contribution to the variety’s cause than Giuseppe Caviola.
The man is a legend in Italy, considered one of the most important winemakers in the country and regularly consulting at more than 30 wineries. The winemaker is famously known as the “Dolcetto King” and his methods have helped wineries from Dogliani to Langhe to update their winemaking methods and make wines that have more sophistication and length.

Since the late 1990’s Penner-Ash has been viewed as one of Oregon’s top wineries making gorgeous wines in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. In the 2021 vintage considered to be one of Oregon’s all-time great years, the 2021 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir that Lynn crafted is gorgeous, a silky tightly woven number that mixes red and black fruits with some sage and baking spices and a savory finish. It’s got some nice weight to it and structure which suggests it’ll age well for the next 10-15 years though it’s already drinking beautifully in its youth.

Feudo Montoni has been one of the best producers in Italy for literally hundreds of years, most notably for their work with Nero D’Avola grape in Sicily. It’s a gorgeous expression at such a good price. The 2020 “Lagnusa” is the perfect pizza or Thanksgiving wine with juicy black fruits, grippy tannins and a wonderful, fresh and herbaceous finish. Vinous Media gave the wine 92 points and raved, calling it “remarkably fresh yet long, leaving the mouth watering while still resonating on hints of blackberry.” You’re going to love this.

Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.
Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.
