Le Macchiole Bolgheri Rosso 2023

97 Points, Decanter – 93 Points, Jeb Dunnuck

Working alongside Luca D’Attoma, Cinzia has not only preserved her late husband’s legacy but even elevated it a few notches, earning the estate worldwide acclaim for their exceptional single-varietal wines: Messorio (Merlot), Paleo (Cabernet), and Scrio (Syrah).

The beauty of their Bolgheri Rosso is that they blend all three of those grapes to make an outrageously good Super Tuscan.  This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Syrah offers incredible sophistication and airworthiness at a fraction of the price of their flagship bottlings. It is so freaking good for the price, it will absolutely blow you away. A 97-point SuperTuscan at this price point is simply unheard of, especially in 2025. I recommend loading up on this one!

“Le Macchiole’s Bolgheri Rosso is a class act in 2023. It features a fresh and precise nose full of black and red berries, pomegranate and floral top notes. In the mouth it’s intense and energetic, with zesty blood orange-tinged red fruits, spice, menthol and Mediterranean scrub overlaying salty blackberry. It’s quite compact, round and dense, with structural yet well-integrated tannins and vibrant acidity.”

The 2023 Bolgheri Rosso boasts a youthful medium ruby red color, while the nose is pretty and floral with aromas of dusty earth, mixed berries, fresh herbs, and violets. The palate has a lot of focus and a bright, refreshing spine of acidity, fine tannins, and a clean, lightly mineral-inflected savoriness on the finish. A fantastic entry to the range with a huge potential for value, drink it over the next 8-10 years. It has a lot of precision and focus at this time and will only improve with another 6-12 months in the bottle.

Le Macchiole has been a big name player in Bolgheri for years, but this is our first offer with the titans of Tuscany. Their entry-level bottling is a serious number – an emphatic introduction to the winery’s vision, perseverance, and winemaking brilliance that has helped earn them a place among Italy’s elite.

When Eugenio Campolmi purchased his first vineyard in Bolgheri in 1975, most people thought he was out of his mind. The area was far from the prestigious wine region we know today. While neighbors like Sassicaia were just starting to scratch the surface, Campolmi saw potential that few others could imagine. He took a risky step when he hired not one but two legendary consultants, Vittorio Fiore and Luca d’Attoma, which eventually paid off as they have become one of Bolgheri’s most revered estates.

What truly set Le Macchiole apart was Campolmi’s revolutionary approach. Instead of following the Bordeaux-blend trend that dominated the region, he pursued the purest expression of individual grape varieties. This philosophy produced wines of such distinctive character and quality that Le Macchiole soon joined Sassicaia, Ornellaia, and Guado al Tasso in Bolgheri’s upper echelon.
