Marie Jacqueson is producing Burgundy that is nothing short of magical in the backwater of Rully, proving once again to really find value, you have to get off the rue nationale. These lots of red and white Rully from Marie, our newest addition to our family of wine-growers, have been incredibly well-received with more requests for reorders than almost any other producer we’ve featured since my visit last winter. The issue is the quantity. Marie was selling her wine just fine before we met so the amounts we’ve been able to bring over have been miniscule, even on the tiny scale that great Burgundy usually measured.
First one up from what is sure to be a legendary 2019, one Galloni’s Vinous Media said of the Pinots, “…the reds are highly perfumed with accentuated floral characteristics are often utterly seductive. The aromatics are delineated and focused: black cherries, wild strawberry, orange zest and blood orange, occasionally cassis on riper Pinot Noirs.”
Marie Jacqueson’s best red is her 1er cru from the vineyard Préaux. The vines are old here, averaging 45 years. The soil is a classic mix of clay and limestone providing for soaring aromatics of strawberry, black cherry, cinammon and roses. The fruit is almost crunchy; incredibly fresh, juicy, really flat-out delicious. Those limestone soils gives the wine great length, with a mineral finish that goes a mile. Great now, great in 10 years, qualitatively worth double the price. There are 96 bottles available and Marie always sells out.

This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.

If you’re looking for arguably the best expression of Rufina each year, you can’t do any better than Selvapiana. Located right in the heart of Chianti Rufina in Tuscany, the producer has long been considered one of the very best. Wine Spectator declared a few years back, “Selvapiana would give stiff competition to first-class red wines from just about anywhere else in the world. It also shows that Chianti Classico does not have a monopoly on the quality of Chianti as a whole.”
Corzano e Paterno is an absolute oasis in the rolling hills of Chianti, a must visit if you go to Tuscany. The wine there is absolutely killer. The Corzanello 2006 is a gem – one from the back of the cellar that I took away many years ago. It’s a gorgeous blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon and even though it has aged gracefully for nearly two decades, it still has plenty of life. I’d drink it now or over the next 3-5 years.
Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.
