Immich-Batterieberg Zeppwingert Reserve Riesling 2022

100 Points, James Suckling – 98 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate

“I have never tasted any wine like this before! Off-the-scale concentration and minerality, yet only medium-bodied with an extraordinary delicate and light-footedness that make this dry riesling as charming as it is monumental. And as it slowly aerates in the glass the citrus and stone fruit aromas slowly expand like the cloud of gas and dust after a supernova. Endless finish. Very limited production. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.”

Only two barrels have been filled of the 2022 Zeppwingert Reserve (a barrique and a 300-liter barrel), which combines intensity with mineral finesse and salinity. Round and rich yet also refined and saline as well as savory on the palate, this Zeppwingert has a long and saline, savory finish. This is a great and finessed Riesling that was bottled with 10.5 grams per liter of residual sugar and 11.5% stated alcohol. There was no generic Zeppwingert produced in that year. Natural cork.

The Immich family history in the Mosel dates back to the Middle Ages, when a Prince von Esch possessed the 12th-century building. Located in the center of Enkirch, the original section of the castle, Escheburg, is named after him.

The estate consists of spans 13 hectares, and is home to one of the very best parcels in the Batterieberg (grand cru in grey slate + quartzit), as well as parcels in the great vineyards of Ellergrub (grand cru in blue slate), Steffensberg (1er cru in red slate) and Zeppwingert (grand cru in grey slate + quartzit). All of these sites contain parcels of very old, ungrafted, pre-phylloxera vines–a genuine treasure trove of vine material almost unknown elsewhere in Germany. But Batterieberg is king.
