I was recently given a bottle of the Hess ‘Shirtail Ranches’ Sauvignon Blanc to taste. While I really enjoyed it (which I rarely do for domestic SB), I was slightly confused because I thought the SB came with a blue label and was called ‘Hess Select.’ That’s when I was told I could have this bottle especially for restaurants.
Of course at the moment, two of my five ‘by-the-glass’ white wines are Sauvignon Blanc, so I don’t have an immediate need for this wine. BUT, since I get a special restaurant price and I do have a restaurant, I can sneak out a little something special to the Nicholas Wines faithful.
The 2022 Hess Shirtail Ranches Sauvignon Blanc is crisp and clean, a vibrant SB that was fermented in 100% stainless steel to preserve its freshness and super-inviting aromatics. It combines fruit from a few of the best counties in California for growing Sauvignon Blanc.
Utilizing fruit from the coastal Mendocino site with blocks more inland combines both grass and tropical notes, with ripe fruit but also a little salinity and more natural acidity. It’s a yin/yang combination that really meshes well.

This one is electric, great minerality, great lemon lime and saltiness. It even has a little ageability. I’d drink this over the next few years. This is one of the absolute best expressions from the region (a Cru vineyard designate in 2011) and so perfect with anything out of the sea but in particular the raw bar. Crisp and clean stone fruit with some pear, and a lot of personality. This is a great new discovery wine to check out.
This wine is a vibrant and incredibly fresh new release with notes of green apple, lemongrass, and some quince with a stony finish that speaks to the special limestone gracing the hillsides of Bué. It is the quintessential Sancerre and matches most any kind of food you want to dream up in your kitchen (but I can’t think of a better treat than a buttery Maine lobster roll!)
The Mâcon-Verzé from the iconic Domaine Leflaive is always world-class and one crazy good value. Drawn from nine special plots, and utilizing a combination of steel, cement and oak fermentation that leads to a wide array of flavor profiles. The new release is absolutely beaming with energy even in its youth. It boasts floral aromas, lemon-lime citrus notes and a minerality that shines throughout.
Sonoma Coast is well-known as a cool-climate region, perfect for growing Chardonnay. That’s why it’s such a big deal for Route Stock to transition over for the first time from Carnernos over to here. The newly released 2021 version has a delightful energy in its youth, with a pale straw color with lime hues. The aromas are of honeysuckle, orange blossom and creme brulee with layers of vanilla and a hint of toffee. The palate is lively yet soft with flavors of lemon cream pie and merange.
