Heaven’s Door relates to Bob Dylan’s Knocking on Heaven’s Door. Turns out Bob is a huge bourbon drinker (usually just before he goes on stage if you’ve seen him lately) & he threw a ton of his own money to start this brand. I had no idea.
Think about it: all these years of being “in the basement mixing up the medicine” has made him a lot of money & he could’ve gone anywhere to source his juice. He chose Indiana and I don’t really find it surprising because of the quality. For us it works out better because a bourbon this good at cask strength from Kentucky would cost around 100 bucks!!
I just re-tasted this beauty and was really pleased with how this one turned out. I can’t believe this is nearly 123 Proof (122.7). You really never get any of the heat. I wouldn’t have thought it was over 105 tasting it. It leads with inviting aromas of burnt caramel, hazelnut, and allspice mix with flavors of dried fruit, caramel, vanilla, and light rye spice. The finish is warm and spicy with subtle and smooth notes of vanilla and oak. This is a great one.

Who doesn’t love Big Bottles?!? This is one I’ve never gotten before and didn’t even know existed before the cult winery reached out with “something special for our support” last week. You have to go all the back to the tough 2014 vintage to find a ‘Southing’ Pinot Noir from Sea Smoke that got less than a 95-point score. Not only is Sea Smoke’s winemaking team outstanding, but their single-vineyards represent some of the best land anywhere in the Russian River Valley. The ‘Southing’ Pinot Noir is the marriage of elegance and complexity utilizing the Sea Smoke Estate Vineyard along the Santa Ynez River.
This is a very rare single barrel Bourbon Whiskey to make its way to Jersey. Maple syrup, butterscotch, caramel & brown sugar with a palate of caramel apple, roasted almond, ripe banana and graham crackers. This one has a full mouthfeel with a nice creamy middle. The finish here lingers with just the right amount of burn. This was born on 2/3/2017 and bottled at 102 Proof. This is a great bottle of Whiskey.
Back in the day, Widow Jane used to be a staple at Nicholas Wines. But as its popular has gone crazy, it’s been tougher and tougher to get my hands on any. This is a hyper small batch bourbon that was aged for a minimum of thirteen years, non-chill filtered and proofed with Widow Jane’s signature limestone mineral water from the Rosendale Mines in New York. It’s a doozy of a bottle at 93 Proof and has notes of vanilla, nutmeg, graham cracker and sweet tobacco.
In the 2020 vintage in Gevrey-Chambertin, yields were super low and temperatures were hotter than most Burgundian winemakers are accustomed. Many picked too late when the sugars were high and the fruit really ripe, but that was not the play. Still, Ann remained as cool in those hot temps as she did so many years ago in Napa, concentrating more on acid levels than sugars and picking at just the right time. This wine is absolutely singing – it’s an age-worthy beauty that should be even better in 4-7 years.
