Haynes Vineyard Chardonnay Coombsville Napa 2020

96 Points, James Suckling

Someone brought this bottle to a dinner I went to recently and it blew me away. The label was classic and unassuming and I’m not usually much of a Chardonnay drinker, so I didn’t have high hopes but I quickly changed my tune. This was a ringer for delicious and ageworthy White Burgundy and it caught my eye. The wine was so incredibly bright and delicious, I couldn’t believe it was Napa Chardonnay, but given the source – it makes sense. This one comes courtesy of Nico Cueva, the longtime star winemaker at Kosta Browne who left when the estate was acquired in 2019, and started a new chapter at Haynes Vineyard. The purity he’s able to get with this Chardonnay is simply unmatched, and I can assure you it’s going to absolutely delight any American and French Chardonnay lovers equally. 96 points from James Suckling, who labeled it “Ripe yet so vivid.” Antonio Galloni of Vinous called it “seriously impressive.” I have the last few six-packs of a phenomenal single-vineyard Chardonnay that will absolutely shine with or without food.

Original price was: $105.00.Current price is: $69.00.

Lime, cooked apple, crushed stone and dried flowers on the nose. Full-bodied yet compacted with a linear and firm texture that leads you down on to the palate. Ripe yet so vivid. From vines planted in 1992. Drink or hold.

If you’re asking, “do they mean THAT Haynes Vineyard?” The answer is yes.

Haynes Vineyard is one of Napa’s most historic places, a sprawling 43-acre wine estate located in Coombsville, the coolest sub-region of Napa Valley. Originally planted back in 1967 under the expert guidance of legendary winemakers Louis M. Martini and André Tchelistcheff, they lay claim as home to the oldest producing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines in all of Napa Valley.

When Kosta Browne was acquired in 2019, their star winemaker Nico Cueva was looking to start something new from the ground up. That’s what attracted him to Haynes Vineyard who had previously only sold their grapes but had recently decided they wanted to bottle on their own. This is where Cueva’s expert minimalist approach combined with the sacred land where he now works is a combination that has proven to be a match made in heaven.
