Under the hustle and bustle of cobbled Dublin streets in the early 1900s, a rare whiskey was quietly making a name for itself. The simple act of marking barrels with spots of colored paint would not only signify their age potential, but would become the namesake for this coveted whiskey, bonded and bottled by The Mitchells – a seventh generation family business.
This is a very limited-edition Irish whiskey that celebrates the 135th anniversary of the Mitchell & Son Family entering whiskey bonding. Needless to say, it’s the Jewel of the ‘Spot’ lineup. You’ve heard of Green Spot, Yellow Spot, Blue Spot and even on occasion, Red. But this is the gold!
Gold Spot is made with a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, and is married with hand-selected Bordeaux wine casks and Port pipes. Aromas of berries, apples, pears, plums, oak spice, vanilla and wine fill the nose, complemented by notes of pot still spice, toasted oak, tart plums, ripe berries, dried fruit and crystallised ginger throughout the palate.

Bulleit isn’t usually one to come out with too many new or limited releases, but the ‘Frontier’ Limited Release bucks that trend. This American Single Malt was made with 100% malted barley, aged in new American spiced oak casks, and bottled at 43% alcohol. It hits with notes of freshly baked pumpernickel bread, candied orange, dried fruits, and maple syrup. She’s a beauty – just wish I had more to sell!
Back in the day, Widow Jane used to be a staple at Nicholas Wines. But as its popular has gone crazy, it’s been tougher and tougher to get my hands on any. This is a hyper small batch bourbon that was aged for a minimum of thirteen years, non-chill filtered and proofed with Widow Jane’s signature limestone mineral water from the Rosendale Mines in New York. It’s a doozy of a bottle at 93 Proof and has notes of vanilla, nutmeg, graham cracker and sweet tobacco.

“Rich layers of spiced fruit aromas reveal themselves in waves; cinnamon baked plums, caramelized apple tart, and floral undertones. Concentrated flavors of mixed baking spices, peach skin, fresh tobacco, and brown sugar are luscious and ever evolving through the suede texture. A pleasure to sip.”
WS #4 2019 Wine of the Year, 96 Points, Wine Spectator
2016 was an incredibly special year in Napa Valley. It was essentially the 5th straight vintage of near perfect-conditions and a lot of the big boys produced some of their biggest, most elegant Cabernets to date. Groth’s was still one of the standouts in any group, a deeply concentrated, weighty Cab with sappy, juicy fruit and a carefully intertwined tannic structure. Absolutely gorgeous.
