Every time I open a bottle of wine from Gianni Doglia, I get the feeling we have a budding rock star of winegrower on our hands. His wines absolutely burst with fruit. They are juicy, long on the palate and deliver incredible bang for the buck. His latest release is a tank-fermented Nebbiolo. Finding great value in Nebbiolo, the grape variety of Barolo and Barbaresco, is a really tough go. Like all great Tuesday night wines, to find value, you have to get off the beaten path.
The hills of Asti, where I found Gianni pruning in the spring of 2015 at 9:00 at night, definitely qualifies. The soil is special in Asti, sandy and laden with limestone, perfect for creating pure wines with plenty of finesse. The ’18 Nebbiolo Monferrato is purple to its core, bright and wonderfully aromatic. Drink it all summer long with grilled meat, salmon or pizza or just by itself, it’s a delicious glass of wine all by itself.

Like its ritzier neighbors in Barolo, Doglia Nebbiolo Monferrato first wows in nose, just blasting out of the glass with a killer bouquet of violets laced with anise. Drink it in a big glass to bring out the aromatics!

Beef cuts like ribeye or prime rib go great with this wine, as do sausages, duck, and pork.
Anne Sery describes her Trousse Chemise Cabernets as an ode to the Left Bank and her winemaking roots. It’s a beautiful and fresh Cabernet with aromas that leap from the glass with of black raspberry, violets, and creme de liquor notes. The mouth gives generous amounts of juicy black fruits at the core with hints of baking spice and a smooth, savory finish. This is a terrific partner for just about anything from hard cheese, to poultry, summer salads, you name it!

Avignonesi’s wines took Nicholas Wines by storm last year with their ‘Grifi’ SuperTuscan, a highly rated, highly delicious bottle that put the winery firmly on my radar. It’s a great bottle of wine, but at this price – it completely overdelivers which is exactly what you’re looking for.

Since the late 1990’s Penner-Ash has been viewed as one of Oregon’s top wineries making gorgeous wines in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. In the 2021 vintage considered to be one of Oregon’s all-time great years, the 2021 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir that Lynn crafted is gorgeous, a silky tightly woven number that mixes red and black fruits with some sage and baking spices and a savory finish. It’s got some nice weight to it and structure which suggests it’ll age well for the next 10-15 years though it’s already drinking beautifully in its youth.

This is a really exciting new release in the collection of single-vineyards from the Wagner Family, and arguably the most interesting one of the bunch. This is the only Pinot Noir in the Caymus collection that has the advantage of being from a natural Pinot Noir haven in the Russian River Valley. Dairyman Vineyard’s proximity to the pacific ocean, with its morning fog and afternoon coastal breezes allows for an even and elongated growing season, with super concentrated and expressive grape clusters that help make this Dijon clone Pinot Noir one that you need.
