In terms of quality in the Russian River Valley, you probably can’t do any better than Gary Farrell. Their work with Burgundian varietals is simply unparalleled. Even though the wine pioneer is long out of the picture now, the winery was put into the hands of rising superstar– Theresa Heredia (formerly with Joseph Phelps) in 2012. All she’s done since taking over is rack up just about every award and accolade in the book– taking a great legacy and turning it into a winemaking dynasty.
Since taking over the helm, the winery has been name winery of the year by Pinot Report in 2015, Winery of the Year in 2016 by PinotFile, top 50 producers in Sonoma by Wine Spectator and has been named Top 100 wineries in the world back-to-back years by Wine & Spirits Magazine. She earned a winemaker of the year nod last year from Wine Enthusiast– not a surprising feat when you consider she made their #1 Wine of the Year in 2017’s Top 100.
Theresa’s wines are delicious. If you’re a Pinot or a Chardonnay drinker who hasn’t tried one yet, you’ve gotta get your hands on some of her work. In the few years I’ve been trying her wines, they’re remarkably bright and balanced with great structure and tremendous lift.

Crafted from some of Hallberg Vineyard’s best blocks with a keen focus on clones 667, 777, 828, Pommard and an enigmatic ‘suitcase’ clone, the 2016 Hallberg showcases exceptional depth with ripe red fruit character largely leaning into cherry, raspberry, strawberry and a hint of dried lavender in the mix. Black tea, savoury spice and silky tannins lay the groundwork for an elegant harmony of fresh acidity, seamless structure and a juicy finish. Drinking Window 2019 – 2024

This lush wine offers layers of orange, rhubarb and spice. Black tea and clove chime in, showcasing the beauty and intensity of this wine’s personality.

The 2016 Pinot Noir Hallberg Vineyard has a pale to medium ruby color and subdued nose of forest floor, bitter citrus peel, tobacco and smoke with a core of ripe red and blue berries. The palate packs in the earthy blue and red fruits, with firm, slightly grippy tannins and a nuanced, amaro-laced finish.

The 2021 Napa Valley East side Cuvee is an instant classic. From the first whiff to the moment it hits the lips, its clear that this is a fabulously concentrated, serious wine: black in color, and featuring aromas of cassis, cedar and chocolate-tinged purple fruit. The mouthfeel is plush and voluptuous with a firm, solid finish that speaks to its potential for considerable aging.

“The 2020 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is truly sensational. It begins with striking aromas of fresh blackberries, blueberries and dark plums that are laced with fresh spring florals, mocha, sweet exotic spices, graphite and gravel nuances all taking shape. The palate is full-bodied and displays a remarkable combination of power and elegance throughout. This is beautifully structured and extremely expressive, as it possesses outstanding depth and concentration all they way through the long, finessed finish. Year after year, the Columbia Valley Cabernet is one of the most impressive wines, and there is no exception here, as it combines all the wonderful qualities of the 2020 vintage from Quilceda Creek into one expression. This is fantastic already and readers will be in for a real treat, as this simply marvelous wine will continue to deliver the goods for years to come.”
Not Eligible for Futher Discount-From famed winemaker, Robert Foley comes an absolute delight of a bottle of wine. A seamless Bordeaux blend of 80% Cabernet, 17% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot that is incredibly smoothly now but should have another decade easy of prime drinking. It is the definition of a Saturday Night bottle of wine. One to cherish for a special occasion.

“Vignon’s 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape delivers even more than I hoped for based on a previous sample. Hints of garrigue, roses, cherries and raspberries appear on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied, silky and long, with an intense, almost briny finish. The assemblage is 50% Grenache, 10% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, plus smaller proportions of seven other permitted varieties, while the élevage includes foudres, demi-muids, concrete and wooden tanks, plus terracotta amphorae.”
