Flowers Vineyards and Winery is a few different things. It’s one of the pioneers in the Sonoma Coast for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, a top 10 most popular restaurant brand in the country, an absolute critic darling and easily one of the most beautiful places on planet earth. Seriously, look at the pictures– I dare you to find a pretty vineyards anywhere.
When they first were starting out almost 30 years ago, Joan and Walt Flowers had a simple goal: to make exceptional wine that captures the wild beauty of the land and the spirit of the Sonoma Coast. Needless to say, they’ve accomplished all that and more.
Their 2013 Estate Pinot Noir is a quintessential Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir even if you might not know that from the critics reviews. Granted, I didn’t taste it in 2014 or 2015 when these folks did, but I tasted it in 2022 and can tell you it’s beautifully structured, intricately woven, silky smooth and wonderfully harmonized and it’s a hell of a bright, easy sippin Pinot Noir with a little bit of age to it. A beauty now and for the next two to three years, I’d predict.

Shy and reserved, this cool-climate wine opens coyly with a burst of spearmint on the nose, evolving into layers of flavor steeped in rhubarb, black cherry and tea. Soft and lilting, the wine’s finish conjures thoughts of strawberry cream.

It’s no surprise the Wine Advocate has called the Ventoux a “screaming bargain.” Carved off the left bank of the Rhone River, the 2020 Delas Ventoux is a gorgeous medium-bodied wine with wonderful crushed red fruits, a silky mouthfeel, tremendous structure and that signature Rhone spice on the finish. I haven’t had this wine available for a few vintages, but I figure it’s the perfect springtime Red to bring back in the fold!
In the 2020 vintage in Gevrey-Chambertin, yields were super low and temperatures were hotter than most Burgundian winemakers are accustomed. Many picked too late when the sugars were high and the fruit really ripe, but that was not the play. Still, Ann remained as cool in those hot temps as she did so many years ago in Napa, concentrating more on acid levels than sugars and picking at just the right time. This wine is absolutely singing – it’s an age-worthy beauty that should be even better in 4-7 years.

Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.

Avignonesi’s wines took Nicholas Wines by storm last year with their ‘Grifi’ SuperTuscan, a highly rated, highly delicious bottle that put the winery firmly on my radar. It’s a great bottle of wine, but at this price – it completely overdelivers which is exactly what you’re looking for.
