There’s a very special ring of vineyards, just above the fog line, high atop Howell Mountain where many of Napa’s most sought-after grapes are grown. Their estate bottlings are synonymous with $200+ price tags, yet collectors scramble to gobble them up: CADE, Randy Dunn, Lokoya, Cimarossa, and Nicholas fan favorite – Bob Foley.
And it was from here that Ry Richards was able to craft a tiny lot of just 4 barrels of once-in-a-lifetime Cabernet from the stunning 2019 vintage. As Antonio Galloni reported on the vintage: “Napa Valley experienced two stunning back-to-back vintages in 2018 and 2019 the likes of which I have never seen..the 2019s I have tasted so far are fabulous.”
For context, Wine Spectator awarded the 2018 vintage a near-perfect 99 points. They’ve yet to officially weigh in on 2019 but most believe it will be even better. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate warns to “take advantage of 2019, while it lasts”.
Of course, those $200 price tags will scare off many potential buyers, but that’s where Ry Richards comes in. Fiancetto is a decidedly no-frills operation. No tasting room rent, no staff, zero marketing budgets – just Ry and the fruit. Heck Ry doesn’t even need to pay himself. You see, Ry’s day job is at one of Napa’s iconic estates, Chappellet, where he assists Phil Titus in all aspects of sourcing and winemaking.
So while Ry’s vineyard-mate’s wine will fetch just north of $300 (deservedly so), Fiancetto will show you what the price looks like without all the overhead.

It’s no surprise the Wine Advocate has called the Ventoux a “screaming bargain.” Carved off the left bank of the Rhone River, the 2020 Delas Ventoux is a gorgeous medium-bodied wine with wonderful crushed red fruits, a silky mouthfeel, tremendous structure and that signature Rhone spice on the finish. I haven’t had this wine available for a few vintages, but I figure it’s the perfect springtime Red to bring back in the fold!
90-92 Pts, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 91 Pts (Editors’ Choice), Wine Enthusiast – 91 Pts, Decanter
The wines get consistent high praise but 2018 is truly something special. 90-92 from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. 91 points and an Editor’s Choice designation from Wine Enthusiast. 91 more from Decanter who provides “There is so much to enjoy in the smaller appellations this year. Drinking Window 2022 – 2031” and another 90 point score from James Suckling. This is a home run value – especially for the price.
In the 2020 vintage in Gevrey-Chambertin, yields were super low and temperatures were hotter than most Burgundian winemakers are accustomed. Many picked too late when the sugars were high and the fruit really ripe, but that was not the play. Still, Ann remained as cool in those hot temps as she did so many years ago in Napa, concentrating more on acid levels than sugars and picking at just the right time. This wine is absolutely singing – it’s an age-worthy beauty that should be even better in 4-7 years.

“The 2020 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is truly sensational. It begins with striking aromas of fresh blackberries, blueberries and dark plums that are laced with fresh spring florals, mocha, sweet exotic spices, graphite and gravel nuances all taking shape. The palate is full-bodied and displays a remarkable combination of power and elegance throughout. This is beautifully structured and extremely expressive, as it possesses outstanding depth and concentration all they way through the long, finessed finish. Year after year, the Columbia Valley Cabernet is one of the most impressive wines, and there is no exception here, as it combines all the wonderful qualities of the 2020 vintage from Quilceda Creek into one expression. This is fantastic already and readers will be in for a real treat, as this simply marvelous wine will continue to deliver the goods for years to come.”
