Feudo Montoni Nero d’Avola Vrucara 2018 (Six-Packs w. Wooden Case)

This is Feudo Montoni’s top cuvee of organic Nero D’Avola, an ancient variety indigenous to Sicily, and comes from the heart of the island, on its mountainous spine between 500 and 700 meters in elevation. The elevation is crucial to escape the south Mediterranean heat with cool nights allowing for a long ripening season. The vines are pre-phylloxera era, nearing their 100 year birthday. Fabio’s Nero D’Avola vines average 98 years old, producing tiny grapes with thick skins allowing for great aromatic complexity, a powerhouse mid-palate of black, spicy fruit and a fine, long finish. As big as it is, the wine is extremely fresh.

Original price was: $420.00.Current price is: $270.00.

94 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
“The Feudo Montoni 2017 Sicilia Nero d’Avola Vrucara is a certified organic expression of Sicily’s vinous protagonist, Nero d’Avola, from a single vineyard planted to ancient pre-phylloxera vines. The fruit is dark and shows medium concentration, pointing to the hot and dry conditions of this growing season. But this native grape thrives in hot weather, allowing for plenty of aromatic expression and depth. Black cherry opens the bouquet, but it follows softly to toasted nut, sweet potting soil and cured tobacco. Ultimately, this is more of a mid-weight wine than it is an all-out, full-bodied expression. This lighter approach gives this red an extra layer of elegance and grace, with some fruity sweetness on the close.”

93 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Elegantly structured, this opens with enticing scents of ripe dark-skinned fruit, blue flower, Mediterranean brush and whiffs of sun-baked earth. Made with organically farmed grapes, the smooth, delicious palate offers juicy black cherry, blackberry, carob and baking spice alongside polished tannins.

As big as it is, the wine is fresh and terrific with Chef Kevin’s Killer Beef Tartar.

A big wine that needs something big to go with it. I can think of nothing better than a good Beef tartare appertif.
