Feudo Montoni is the kind of place that makes you truly long for Sicily. They have a beautiful farm with a villa and gorgeous symmetrical vineyards are home to mostly very old vines (50 years of age and up, but many are pre-phylloxeric and well over 100 years old).
They make phenomenal wines, white, red and a rosato and it’s actually their pink wine that seems to steal the show in the 2020 vintage. This beauty got two big scores in its corner, and it really shows one of the most elegant and sophisticated examples of pink wine. It’s complex, it’s well-thought out, and it’s completely delicious– no surprise for this wonderful Sicilian winery that continues to pace the entire region.

Crisp and tangy, this lovely rosato opens with aromas of rose, pepper and pine needle. Made with organically grown grapes, it’s dry, bright and savory, featuring pomegranate, wild strawberry, saline and culinary spices.

The 2020 Nerello Mascalese Rosé di Adele keeps you at the edge of the glass with a delicate yet stunning bouquet of ripe peach laced with candied ginger and a dusting of sweet spice. Its textures are fleshy, yet the expression is lifted and spry, with a vivid display of freshly sliced pear, while drenched in minerals and motivated by lively acidity. There’s a crunchy feel through the finale, as the palate reverberates with residual tension, tapering off to a hint of sour melon.

“The 2021 Barbera d’Alba Bricco dei Merli shows a beautifully fruity, almost juicy personality that paints an authentic portrait of this grape. The Congo winemaking team has worked out its approach to elegant wines. This Barbera does not show any of the excesses, like sourness or too much acidity, that can sometimes characterize Barbera when made in less capable hands.” -Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Elena Walch’s newly released 2022 Pinot Bianco continues to be the best example of Pinot Blanc anywhere. She’s the undisputed queen. There’s so much energy in this new release. Super light in color, with a busy nose that boasts ripe aromas of citrus, granny smith apple with a hint of freshly mowed grass. Made entirely in stainless steel, the wine is expressive, fresh and finishes as clean and tight as can be. Definitely will continue the run of 90+ scores once this one is reviewed.
Corzano e Paterno is an absolute oasis in the rolling hills of Chianti, a must visit if you go to Tuscany. The wine there is absolutely killer. The Corzanello 2006 is a gem – one from the back of the cellar that I took away many years ago. It’s a gorgeous blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon and even though it has aged gracefully for nearly two decades, it still has plenty of life. I’d drink it now or over the next 3-5 years.

Avignonesi’s wines took Nicholas Wines by storm last year with their ‘Grifi’ SuperTuscan, a highly rated, highly delicious bottle that put the winery firmly on my radar. It’s a great bottle of wine, but at this price – it completely overdelivers which is exactly what you’re looking for.
