“Sometimes the impact of a winery is so positive that it enriches a whole area with its quality, consistency and continuity. This is true of Fattoria Zerbina.” – Gambero Rosso
Many of you have been dazzled by the wines of Cristina Geminani and her Zerbina estate – particularly the Sangiovese she grows just on the other side of the Apennines from Tuscany. Lucky for us or her Sangiovese would cost $50+ and she would never dare to commit financial suicide by making a rose.
And even though rose here breaks ‘the rules’ – giving it an IGT on the label, the wine is absolutely stunning. I’ve been a fan of her wines for quite some time and have been quite happy to see more and more making their way stateside. But despite all the praise I could lay on these wines, I’ll let the experts do the talking.
Robert Parker, Jr. himself, said “I occasionally wonder what I should write about the wines of Cristina Geminani, the owner-winemaker of this estate, one of the most talented women in Italian wine…and about the quality of the wines there is little to discuss – this is the leading estate in Emilia-Romagna, has been so for fifteen years, and it cannot be ignored.”

90 Points, Vinous
The 2022 Rosa di Ceparano is perfumed and delicate in the glass, wafting up with young peach, wild strawberries and sweet smoke aromas. It’s round and supple on the palate. Ripe apple and melon tones are carried across a core of lime-tinged acidity. This finishes potent and long, yet still relatively fresh, leaving slightly savory hints of citrus and minerals.

Fresh off a huge feature in The Wall Street Journal in which they were crowned as the top Prosecco Rose in a lineup of 14, I suspect what was once our little secret will explode. James Suckling also finally got around to tasting it and gave it 91 points. I’d rate it even higher. The 2021 Bisol Jeio Brut Prosecco Rosé is remarkable, and simply put, mouth-wateringly delicious. Inviting aromas of flowers and wild strawberries, with a complex mouthfeel that sings with citrus fruits and creaminess from the tiny crisp bubbles.

The Zenato family has built up quite the reputation for delivering exceptional value with their red and whites in Veneto. Their Pinot Grigio is a particularly great value, punching way above its weight class. Delicately scented and soft on the palate, it offers classic citrus and floral notes in a balanced elegant style. It’s smooth and refreshing with a long, pleasant finish. Great with food.
The 2022 Brunori ‘Le Gemme’ Verdichio is everything you’re looking for in a vibrant, food-friendly white wine. About a billion times better than every-day Pinot Grigio, the Brunori is an electric, vibrant white which combines delicious fruit and vibrancy with boasts a killer nose of white peach, honeycomb and almonds. The fruit is wonderfully concentrated with a salty, stony finish that goes forever. The best part of this beauty is that it’s absolutely delicious year round.
