Gran Coronas represents a monumental turning point in innovation for Familia Torres. It’s when Miguel A. Torres went against the centuries long regional norms and planted Cabernet Sauvignon in Penedès in the 1960s at a time when most plantings were indigenous white varieties. Miguel’s outrageous quality Cabernet Sauvignon has led to Gran Coronas becoming a benchmark wine for the region. By blending Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo, followed by prolonged oak aging, he puts together one of the family’s finest efforts each vintage.
If you’re looking for the best, affordable Thanksgiving wine, let me introduce you to this little treat courtesy of the Torres Family form the 2017 vintage. A juicy and yet silky Cabernet dominate blend that also features Tempranillo is just about as inviting as a wine gets. This is an unrivaled Spanish value. Black jammy fruits perfectly laced together with firm, chewy tannins, this wine has so much balance and poise and offers a slightly sweet finish capped off with well-integrated oak and a dash of spice courtesy of the Tempranillo.

Aromas of blackberries, blueberries, oyster shell, cloves, smoke and cigar box. Full-bodied with supple tannins. Round and creamy. Savory, mineral finish. Drink or hold.

The 50 hectare estate of Maurice Robert is the jewel of this beautiful growing region, located east of Bordeaux. Robert is first and foremost a viticulturist, tending his vines like gardens. The Bordeaux Rouge 2016, a barrel-fermented, vibrant blend Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with juicy cassis fruit and just the right touch of savory spice. It is a perfect choice for roasted poultry, grilled burgers or steaks or any Alpine cheese.

Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.
WS #4 2019 Wine of the Year, 96 Points, Wine Spectator
2016 was an incredibly special year in Napa Valley. It was essentially the 5th straight vintage of near perfect-conditions and a lot of the big boys produced some of their biggest, most elegant Cabernets to date. Groth’s was still one of the standouts in any group, a deeply concentrated, weighty Cab with sappy, juicy fruit and a carefully intertwined tannic structure. Absolutely gorgeous.

Avignonesi’s wines took Nicholas Wines by storm last year with their ‘Grifi’ SuperTuscan, a highly rated, highly delicious bottle that put the winery firmly on my radar. It’s a great bottle of wine, but at this price – it completely overdelivers which is exactly what you’re looking for.
