Fabre Montmayou wines have been a staple of mine since I launched Nicholas Wines. It’s hard to imagine a wine that delivers more bang for your buck and consistency than what Herve Fabre is able to produce from his 100+ year old vines each vintage. Last year, his 2018 Reserva Malbec landed on Wine Enthusiast’s Top 100 Buys of the Year, James Suckling gave it 92 points and our allocation went quickly.
After trying this year’s version last week, I’m definitely expecting similar results. This one has that vibrant and jammy mix of red and dark fruits with great structure and tannins and a sleek core. It’s a BIG RED that dances in the glass and with a small modest price tag, it’s the kind of wine that you always want in stock.
91 pts, 2020 Decanter Wine Awards
“Spicy, savoury and herb aromas mixed with damson and blackberry. Quite refreshing with a firm structure and mellow round body.”
If you’re looking for the next lip-smacking house red to stash up on, this one is for you. I
Absolutely everything. The best part might be that is equally good with or without food.
The old vines are rooted in a mix of sand, clay and limestone, the perfect mix for bringing out finesse, juicy fruit and mineral length in Merlot, Cab Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2015 is a marvel, featuring a deep garnet-purple color and cedar-laced nose of roses, blackberries and Bing cherry. Medium-full bodied, the fragrant fruit gains volume in the mouth, finishing long and mineral. For this price, it’s simply amazing. I dare anybody to disagree!
90 Points, Wine Spectator
Fresh off its feature as one of Wine Spectator’s ‘Exciting California Values Under $25’, winemaker Matt Cline’s 2018 Contra Costa Zinfandel is a gem crafted off old-vines between 110-140 years in age. This is a bowl of blackberry fruit with a dusting of baking spice. The fruit is pure, fresh and long making it both delicious on its own or terrific with a burger, BBQ ribs, or grilled leg of lamb. Crazy cheap for what is in the bottle, load up!
If you’re a fan hedonistic Howell Mountain Cabernet, then this should be missed. Packed with immense fruit, this is a Napa Valley powerhouse. Ruby-garnet in color this bold wine presents bright cherry flavors with nuanced undertones of chocolate and clove. Beautiful tannins prop up a sophisticated and persistent finish that just goes on for days.
93 Pts, James Suckling
This offer is really an easy one. Two of the greatest wine pioneers from two different hemispheres (Baron Eric Rothschild from ‘Chateau Lafite Rothschild’ and Nicolas Catena from ‘Catena’) join forces to make a delicious, Bordeaux style Malbec, crafted nearly 4600 feet above sea level and offered for a fantastic price. This beauty that James Suckling called, “Pure Malbec” is a case buy all the way.
