When Hervé first arrived in Mendoza from Bordeaux in the late ’80s, everyone else was planting new vineyards while he quietly bought up the old head-trained Malbec vines that had been established over a century ago by earlier French immigrants. These incredible 100+ year-old vines surrounding his Vistalba winery are the secret to this wine’s incredible power and finesse.

James Suckling found “blackberries, dark chocolate and a touch of geraniums and herbs,” calling it “juicy and chewy” with perfect balance. Tim Atkin called it “a little lesson on what a Malbec from the historic area should be” – deep in flavor, soft in tannins, and full of fruit and flowers. Meanwhile, Descorchados praised its “dense and powerful body” that deserves at least five years of cellaring. It’s one of the finest under $50/btl of Malbec on the market.

Original price was: $30.00.Current price is: $22.00.

94 Points, Descorchados
For the Gran Reserva, the old vineyards established more than 100 years ago at a property they have in Vistalba, beside the Mendoza River. With a relatively early harvest in late March and a rather cool year, this wine is juicy and refreshing, with a lot of tart red fruits in a dense and powerful body, with firm tannins and long flavors. A big wine that deserves to be cellared for at least five years.

Blackberries, dark chocolate and a touch of geraniums and herbs on the nose. Juicy and chewy on the palate with a medium body and a tight, medium-length finish. Drink from 2025.

Fabre Montmayou has one of the largest heritages in old vineyards in Mendoza, old vines planted in the beginning of the 20th century in Vistalba, surrounding the winery and on the north bank of the Mendoza River. They use a selection of this material to obtain the grapes for this malbec that’s deep in flavor, soft in tannins, balanced in every aspect, and full of fruit and flowers. A little lesson on what a malbec from the so-called first zone—the historic area of Mendozan cabernet—should be.

This is exactly what winemaking savvy mixed with incredible vineyards with 100+ year-old ancient vines brings you. Color, power with finesse, length… and big scores. That’s once again what we have here today.

I got my hands on Herve Fabre’s ‘Gran Reserva’ Malbec bottling. This isn’t his high-flying fan favorite, Reserva bottling, it’s the Gran Reserva. It’s even a step up from that. In Argentina, Gran Reserva bottlings must be aged for at least 24 months in the cellar, twice as long as the Reserva bottlings. They’re also only made in great vintages.
