For years, we’ve sold oceans of Tony Soter’s Etude Lyric Pinot Noir for fifteen bucks a bottle or so. Other than CHAD, it’s pretty much the only ‘value’ domestic Pinot Noir I’ve ever cared for.
Why did customers love it so much? Well – first at a $30 release price, we were half off. People love that. But more importantly – it’s a well-made, truly gulpable Pinot – full of easy, breezy bright cherry fruits and truly suitable as a cocktail wine.
But like everything else the last couple of years, the price has been steadily rising. A quick check on Wine.com yesterday showed it at $20.99. Still a great price — except they don’t have the wine anymore.
But after some heavy arm twisting with the wholesaler, we’re able to revisit those glory days from four years ago and actually BEAT them!
Etude’s Lyric cuvee is a pure ruby color to the core with a nose that is just a fantastic bowl of ripe berries. Intensely fruity with notes of baking spices, sandalwood and earth, this Pinot has a long, silky finish. Pair with roasted salmon or poultry or enjoy just by itself.

Not Eligible for Futher Discount-From famed winemaker, Robert Foley comes an absolute delight of a bottle of wine. A seamless Bordeaux blend of 80% Cabernet, 17% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot that is incredibly smoothly now but should have another decade easy of prime drinking. It is the definition of a Saturday Night bottle of wine. One to cherish for a special occasion.
In the 2020 vintage in Gevrey-Chambertin, yields were super low and temperatures were hotter than most Burgundian winemakers are accustomed. Many picked too late when the sugars were high and the fruit really ripe, but that was not the play. Still, Ann remained as cool in those hot temps as she did so many years ago in Napa, concentrating more on acid levels than sugars and picking at just the right time. This wine is absolutely singing – it’s an age-worthy beauty that should be even better in 4-7 years.
The newly released Fiancetto Howell Mt. Cabernet is a dream – a gorgeous, elegant dark-fruited Cabernet Sauvignon that is it picks up time in the glass, unfurls its full signature of cedar laced cassis nose and mid palate of chocolate-covered cherries and savory spices. Only four palates of this (224 cases) were made off a gorgeous, sprawling high elevation spot 1500 feet above sea level. It’s full and plush and finishes fresh and oh so long. The price is crazy for Howell Mountain Cabernet but that’s what Ry Richards and Fiancetto is all about.

“The 2021 Malbec Reserva, from Vistalba, Lujan de Cuyo, was 60% aged in barrels for 12 months. Purple in color. The nose presents notes of fresh plum and violets, white pepper, strawberry, hints of spice and aromas from the aging process. It’s initially indulgent in the mouth, with good fat, and volume and a velvety texture. The flavors are bold and full-bodied. This 2021 overdelivers at the price.” -Vinous
