The focus at Domaine Daulny is laser-sharp; very simply, to make some of the best Sancerre in the world. He counts his likes in bottles sold….Daulny is a perennial fan favorite at Nicholas Wines and always goes way too fast. Few addresses are as good in Sancerre as Etienne Daulny in the beautiful village of Verdigny.
He’s the latest in a ridiculously long line of Daulnys to grow Sauvignon Blanc in Sancerre. It’s not so easy to grow grapes here, it’s cold, the soil is poor, hail is always a risk and to make great wine, you can’t make a ton of it. So, making wine here is more a labor of love than it is a great business plan. But it’s hard to argue with the results.
Tasting Etienne’s racy, electric Sancerre makes it pretty obvious that there is a higher purpose to his labor. It’s a terrific white wine, so fine aromatically, with grapefruit and white peach fruit in the mouth and a crisp, fresh finish. It’s a great choice for a house white, absolutely perfect with all the fish in the sea but just as good with roasted poultry, any kind of goat cheese or just by itself. A glass of Sancerre while cooking or while waiting to eat is a beautiful thing.

2022 was an absolutely perfect vintage in this respect and unfortunately, I think it will be one of the last, if not THE last. As winegrower Jean-Marc Brocard reported to Decanter: “When we taste the wines, we feel that the balance between acidity and ripeness is very good. It’s a classic style of Chablis. In the end, even after such a heat during summertime, we stay in a cool year reference.” He also alluded to the ageability of the vintage, saying “Let’s give them time, we must let nature do its work.”
Every year, Pierre Sparr’s Alsacian Riesling is one of the top scoring wines in the under $20 category. There’s a consistency there and consumers know they can count on a Riesling that is aromatic, fruity, elegant, clean and vibrant. Pierre Sparr wines are extremely food-friendly especially in the widely praised 2021 vintage where quality rose to an all-time high. It’s a bone-dry beauty with layers of citrus fruits, framed by wet stone and mineral character that adds dimension.
Elena Walch’s newly released 2022 Pinot Bianco continues to be the best example of Pinot Blanc anywhere. She’s the undisputed queen. There’s so much energy in this new release. Super light in color, with a busy nose that boasts ripe aromas of citrus, granny smith apple with a hint of freshly mowed grass. Made entirely in stainless steel, the wine is expressive, fresh and finishes as clean and tight as can be. Definitely will continue the run of 90+ scores once this one is reviewed.
We’re nearing the end of what was a flawlessly crafted, high energy coastal Chardonnay release from one of California’s hottest spots. It’s still every bit as bright and refreshing as you could want and it hits with clean, pristine green apple fruits, pears and citrus notes with a hint of that limestone-influenced minerality. It’s a fantastic wine for all seasons, the perfect pair with mixed seafood, summer tomatoes, corn and freshly caught fish.
