The focus at Domaine Daulny is laser-sharp; very simply, to make some of the best Sancerre in the world. He counts his likes in bottles sold….Daulny is a perennial fan favorite at Nicholas Wines and always goes way too fast. Few addresses are as good in Sancerre as Etienne Daulny in the beautiful village of Verdigny. He’s the latest in a ridiculously long line of Daulnys to grow Sauvignon Blanc in Sancerre. It’s not so easy to grow grapes here, it’s cold, the soil is poor, hail is always a risk and to make great wine, you can’t make a ton of it. So, making wine here is more a labor of love than it is a great business plan. But it’s hard to argue with the results.
Tasting Etienne’s racy, electric Sancerre makes it pretty obvious that there is a higher purpose to his labor. It’s a terrific white wine, so fine aromatically, with grapefruit and white peach fruit in the mouth and a crisp, fresh finish. It’s a great choice for a house white, absolutely perfect with all the fish in the sea but just as good with roasted poultry, any kind of goat cheese or just by itself. A glass of Sancerre while cooking or while waiting to eat is a beautiful thing.

Glistening pale yellow-green to the rim, infused with mouth-watering aromas of ripe apple, pear and quince, and crushed almonds with honey and rich creamy middle and a fantastic rush of acidity and minerality that are present throughout. A calling card of Bonhomme’s Vire-Clesse, if you closed your eyes and took a sip, it would have you convinced you were drinking Meursault at least a 3x price tag.
The 2016 vintage in Napa was nearly perfect for winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val). With ideal weather all throughout harvest, he crafted the Faustini Money Road Chardonnay off the famous vineyard located in the coveted Oakville AVA. The picturesque vineyard off Oakville Crossroad is platinum rated, known for its ideal combination of soil & climate and the big A list names that routinely source fruit. Kian’s Money Road Chard is still youthful despite having a few years of age, probably as a result of its 18 months of slumber in 1/4 new Oak.
For years now, I’ve been absolutely delighted by the White Burgundies at Domaine Corsin. There’s really good reason for that. The Corsin’s holdings in Pouilly-Fuissé include many of the best situated sites in the appellation. This wine comes from a selection of older vines grown in these limestone soils. The current vintage is simply showing fantastic at the moment. The 2020 Corsin Domain’s Pouilly-Fuissé ‘Vieilles Vignes’ displays a bright golden hue with a hint of green. Its subtle bouquet with a woody-vanilla note enhances the slightly sharp, sophisticated fullness on the palate mingled with a generous underlying impression of toasted bread.
It’s hard to beat a great value white wine and this one is a at least a cut above the rest. One prominant industry insider called the 2022 edition, “the best white wine by any within $20/cs of this price.” It’s super crisp with a great mineral streak, and was carefully picked by hand when the temperature is coolest and is kept cool all the way into the press. From there, the effect of the mineral soil takes over, providing great finesse and freshness in every bottle. This white blend has great backbone and a lot of juicy fruit coming through behind aromas of flowers and stone fruits. At this price, it’s a no brainer.
