In what I’m now willing to declare as the best Barolo in the 2016 vintage, (yes, even better than the Sperss from Gaja that I loved), Elvio Cogno’s Grand Cru ‘Ravera’ bottling gives wine lovers endless layers of structure and class, with so much dark fruit to sink your teeth into and lucious notes of creme de cassis and cigar box notes that hit you in waves. This Barolo has the bones to drink wonderfully for a half century, that much is already evident. Just how great it can become? That is a mystery worth standing the test of time.
From the fourth generation wine family that Galloni called “one of the hottest in Piedmont” comes their best wine ever. Drawn exclusively from the ‘Ravera’ section, the best part of the estate vineyard with 70-year old Nebbiolo vines. 99 Points from Wine Enthusiast, and a 97+ more from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, the highest scores the winery has ever received from both publications. Who would’ve thought that a 97+ score would fire me up, but it did… it’s not high enough!!
Undoubtedly, this wine will be worth $250+ bottle in a few years time, but for now this collectible checks in at $99/bottle, easily worth the price of admission for one of the best Piedmont wines I’ve had to date. This is a treasure of a bottle of wine. If you don’t have any room in the cellar, add one more rack– it’s the right thing to do.

95 Points, James Suckling – 94 Points, Wine Spectator – 93 Points, Wine Enthusiast
The new release is here from outstanding winemaking team of Michel Rolland, Charles Thomas, Andy Erickson and David Jelenik. This one always represents one of the best quality-to-price ratios in all of Napa Cab and in the stellar 2021 vintage, this really stands out as one of the best the Valley has to offer. It’s a racy mix of Coombsville fruit from Atlas Peak that absolutely roars out of the bottle. Always one of Napa’s great bargains and a must have even as the price starts to sneak up here a little bit.
100 Pts, International Wine Report – 98 Pts, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 98 Pts, James Suckling
“The 2020 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is truly sensational. It begins with striking aromas of fresh blackberries, blueberries and dark plums that are laced with fresh spring florals, mocha, sweet exotic spices, graphite and gravel nuances all taking shape. The palate is full-bodied and displays a remarkable combination of power and elegance throughout. This is beautifully structured and extremely expressive, as it possesses outstanding depth and concentration all they way through the long, finessed finish. Year after year, the Columbia Valley Cabernet is one of the most impressive wines, and there is no exception here, as it combines all the wonderful qualities of the 2020 vintage from Quilceda Creek into one expression. This is fantastic already and readers will be in for a real treat, as this simply marvelous wine will continue to deliver the goods for years to come.”
90-92 Pts, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 91 Pts (Editors’ Choice), Wine Enthusiast – 91 Pts, Decanter
The wines get consistent high praise but 2018 is truly something special. 90-92 from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. 91 points and an Editor’s Choice designation from Wine Enthusiast. 91 more from Decanter who provides “There is so much to enjoy in the smaller appellations this year. Drinking Window 2022 – 2031” and another 90 point score from James Suckling. This is a home run value – especially for the price.
This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.
