See – the problem is with the Pinot Blanc like a lot of under the radar Oregon white wines, the cost to make the wine is just too high.
But a few weeks later a reprieve came in. The Pinot Blanc was named Wine Enthusiast’s #5 Wine of the Year and it was clear that the project would continue – margins be damned.
Since then – with less than 200 cases made – it’s been nearly impossible to secure an allocation especially since the consistent 92+ point scores the wine receives each year. So our only chance is to take what we can get and go out before the scores come in.
The newly released 2020 Willamette Valley Pinot Blanc is so bright and refreshing, no doubt thanks to it being a product of 100% stainless steel. But in addition to the stony minerality, it also boasts great flavors of green apple, melon and white peach.
This white wine crushes it with food, mainly seafood but really is so stinking good on its own. I still look down at the glass from time to time and think of what an anomaly it is — one of my favorite Oregon wines is a white wine from lowly Gaston. Not to be missed for dry white wine lovers.

From just west of Sancerre, Vincent’s vines are tended organically in flint-laden, calcareous soil which lends a great brightness to the wine. The wine is crisp and aromatic Sauvignon, and is a superb choice for a “cocktail” wine, as an aperitif or to accompany just about anything from sea.
Elena Walch’s newly released 2022 Pinot Bianco continues to be the best example of Pinot Blanc anywhere. She’s the undisputed queen. There’s so much energy in this new release. Super light in color, with a busy nose that boasts ripe aromas of citrus, granny smith apple with a hint of freshly mowed grass. Made entirely in stainless steel, the wine is expressive, fresh and finishes as clean and tight as can be. Definitely will continue the run of 90+ scores once this one is reviewed.
2022 was an absolutely perfect vintage in this respect and unfortunately, I think it will be one of the last, if not THE last. As winegrower Jean-Marc Brocard reported to Decanter: “When we taste the wines, we feel that the balance between acidity and ripeness is very good. It’s a classic style of Chablis. In the end, even after such a heat during summertime, we stay in a cool year reference.” He also alluded to the ageability of the vintage, saying “Let’s give them time, we must let nature do its work.”
Sonoma Coast is well-known as a cool-climate region, perfect for growing Chardonnay. That’s why it’s such a big deal for Route Stock to transition over for the first time from Carnernos over to here. The newly released 2022 beams freshness and comes packed with a delightful energy in its youth. It has a pale straw color with lime hues. The aromas are of honeysuckle, orange blossom and creme brulee with layers of vanilla and a hint of toffee. The palate is lively yet soft with flavors of lemon cream pie and merange.
