A home-run of a Rose by one of Southern France’s top producers at a truly gulpable price. This is probably the best Rose I’ve had in 2022.
You’ve probably heard me talk about Marjorie and Stephane before. Nearly 20 years ago, they took a chance on an ancient vineyard in Languedoc-Roussillon – abandoned because it was nearly impossible to farm with any modern equipment.
The decision maybe didn’t seem to make much sense at first but the wines were absolutely stunning and eventually the sommelier set in Paris caught on to Roc Des Anges. These days, the wines are found at some of the top Michelin-starred restaurants on both sides of the pond.
The 2021 Effet Papillon Rose has arrived– fresh off the boat from France. It is once again made 100% from Grenache (as many of the best Southern French Roses are). Pale salmon in color, it boasts aromas of bright red fruits, orange rinds and a hint of lemon zest. It’s incredibly smooth and dry, making it a great food wine– but this Rose is serious with depth and complexity, making it worthy of enjoying on its own.

Recently Wolffer Estate has expanded their famous Rose line to now include a Cotes de Provence Rose. For my money, it’s hands down a better bottling – an energetic and super fresh pink wine created from the French staple Rose grapes of Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah as opposed to the Long Island version that has a whole lot of varietals mixed in. It’s bright and balanced and the perfect treat for the pool or beach as the weather warms.
From just west of Sancerre, Vincent’s vines are tended organically in flint-laden, calcareous soil which lends a great brightness to the wine. The wine is crisp and aromatic Sauvignon, and is a superb choice for a “cocktail” wine, as an aperitif or to accompany just about anything from sea.

“Deep in color and vinous in its red fruit, this is a spicy and compelling rosé. There’s pristine strawberry flavor at its core, surrounded by accents of red grapefruit, blood orange and fennel. The wine’s intensity rises like its bubbles from base note to high notes, leaving a pale red fruit ghosting in the finish.”
The rolling hills of Vias along the Mediterranean coast is the perfect place to grow special, meaningful Pinot Noir that doesn’t break the bank. For one, the coastal breezes as we’ve seen time and again are essential for building beautiful natural acidity. But then there’s also the rocky volcanic soil that Comtesse Marion is treated to in the Languedoc. That gives the wine a depth of flavors and great concentration but without too much weight. The vines are also all over 30 years in age, an advantage over their peers for sure.
