E. Guigal Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2019

94 Points, Jeb Dunnuck – 94 Points, James Suckling – 92 Points, Wine Spectator

When Marcel Guigal took over in 1961, he transformed the family business into a global phenomenon, acquiring legendary estates and cementing their status as the undisputed kings of the Rhône.

This 2019 Châteauneuf-du-Pape proves why that reputation is bulletproof. Double 94-point scores don’t happen by accident. Jeb Dunnuck called it “up with the finest vintages of this cuvée I’ve ever tasted,” noting its “expressive, classic style” and predicting 10-15 years of glorious evolution. James Suckling matched with 94 points, praising its “serious” character and “muscular structure for long aging.” This is Guigal operating at the highest level, crafting a CDP that rivals anything in their cellar.

94 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
“Darker berries, raspberries, peppery garrigue, and licorice all emerge from Guigal’s 2019 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, a medium to full-bodied, round, concentrated 2019 that has the vintage’s expressive, classic style front and center. I love it today, yet it has the balance as well as structure to evolve for 10-15 years. It’s up with the finest vintages of this cuvée I’ve ever tasted.”

94 Points, James Suckling
“Spicy and meaty with a very solid tannic base, this a serious Chateauneuf that has plenty of black fruit appeal, but also the muscular structure for long aging. Firm and focused finish with lots of energy and drive for this vintage.”

92 Points, Wine Spectator
A late-release Chateauneuf, with aromatic beauty. Shows lovely signs of evolution, with woodsy, dried leaf and earth notes. Dried currant and red fruit flavors are layered with singed garrigue and perfumed violet details. Sweet sandalwood and bay leaf chime in on the finish, in the grip of slightly drying tannins. Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah.”

It’s once in a blue moon that we’re able to score anything from one of France’s most famous and beloved wineries, E. Guigal – let alone secure an offer that gives us the best pricing in the country. But today, from the rock-solid 2020 vintage in the Southern Rhône comes a unanimous Gigondas standout from one of the all-time greats.

Within the Rhône, nobody is as world-renowned for quality and excellence as Etienne Guigal. The winery is easily one of the most recognizable, with their single-vineyard Côte-Rôties fetching nearly $1,000/bottle and always receiving massive scores. After all these years, they are the undisputed kings of the Rhone.
