Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Spätlese 2024

James Suckling #1 Wine of Germany (2025 Top 100)

99 Points, James Suckling – 97 Points, Vinous

“This is one of the wines of the vintage in the Nahe. That starts an explosive nose of Amalfi lemons, white and yellow peaches, lychees and kiwis. Incredible concentration and vibrancy on the tightly focused, medium-bodied palate. A spring-like lightness is married to awesome density, the two so tightly wound that they’re inseparable through the almost endless finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”

“The 2023 Riesling Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Spätlese, grown on shale, has equal notions of moss and lemon. More air makes this smell simply of wet stone. The palate carries gentle sweetness but is absolutely precise and slender. Citrus frames everything with the clearest precision. Everything is serene, zesty, tender, yet so very serious. The 2023 is glorious in its lightness and disarming in its elegance. (Sweet)”

If you don’t know the wines of Donnhoff Hermannshohle, you probably need to change that as quickly as possible. This is one of Riesling’s biggest stars and their entire lineup from entry-level to single-vineyard ‘Cru’ is a force to be reckoned with.

For over 100 years, the Hermannshöhle has been revered as the Nahe‘s top-ranked site and the benchmark by which all other vineyards in the region are judged. It takes its name from a small mine, or “Höhle”, in the middle of the hillside. This site faces due south with the most incredible soils imaginable. If you know this incredible site and the amazing people who run this winery, then their #1 Spot on Suckling’s German Wines of the Year should come as no shock!
