Donnachiara is a family owned and operated winery just outside the boundaries of Montefalcione in Avellino. The origins date back to the turn of the 20th century when Chiara Mazzarelli and the noble surgeon, Antonio Petitto got married and started a new project. Five generations of winemaking later, their legacy lives on stronger than ever thanks to one of the most progressive, state of the art winemaking facilities and arguably the best winemaker in Italy.
Riccardo Cotarella is a winemaking superstar and the most famous and well respected consultant in Italy. Robert Parker Jr. himself heaped perhaps the highest praise possible, referring to him as “one of the most influential personalities in the world of wine in the last 20 years.”
Cotarella makes a number of wines at Donnachiara including today’s Aglianico Campagnia IGT that end up on James Suckling’s “$15 wines that Taste like $50”. It shouldn’t be a surprise. A 93-point score isn’t usually slapped on wines that can be had for less than $15/btl like today’s wine. But given the pedigree of the winery, the winemaking prowess and the wine’s accolades, there’s not much that needs to be thought over. If you’re going to try an Aglianico, it should probably be this one.

93 Points, James Suckling
Layers of ripe plums, orange peel, sweet tobacco and licorice on the nose. Smoke, ash, some tar and cedar, too. It’s full-bodied with firm but smooth tannins. Drink now-2025.

95 Points (Gold Medal), 2022 Decanter Wine Awards
The expert reviews on this incredible new release from Herve Fabre are insane. 90 points and a ‘Best Buy’ designate from Wine Enthusiast, 90 more from Suckling. Ditto from Vinous who called this “young, firm, with well-worked tannins and good structure”. But in a crowded see of nearly 20,000 wines at the Decanter Wine Awards in 2022 – this stole the show. The only 95-point, Gold medal Cabernet that you can get for under $20/bottle, its second straight year in the most rarified air.
90 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Xavier Vignon’s brand spanking new CDR 100% is a thing of beauty. It’s already got a blessing from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate who described this wine as, “Full-bodied, concentrated and supple”. This is a gorgeous and intricate blend that features all of the Southern Rhone appellations. This year, the blend was 40% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, 7% Cinsault, 7% Marselan, 6% Terret Noir. Nobody can do it like the mad scientist, Xavier Vignon.
92 Points, Vinous – 91 Points, Wine Spectator
Feudo Montoni has been one of the best producers in Italy for literally hundreds of years, most notably for their work with Nero D’Avola grape in Sicily. It’s a gorgeous expression at such a good price. The 2020 “Lagnusa” is the perfect pizza or Thanksgiving wine with juicy black fruits, grippy tannins and a wonderful, fresh and herbaceous finish. Vinous Media gave the wine 92 points and raved, calling it “remarkably fresh yet long, leaving the mouth watering while still resonating on hints of blackberry.” You’re going to love this.
Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.
