Tasting the wines of Camile Wallut, of Domaine Saint Amant, gives a feeling that you are tasting something very pure, wholesome, from scratch, if you will. Completely organic, hand-harvested, simply pressed, racked and aged in neutral wood, her wines are perfect representations of high elevation Rhône red wine. For wines from the south of France, Domaine Saint Amant ranks pretty high on my list for both red and white because on a trip a few years ago, I finally realized what makes the difference in the ocean of wine that is the Côtes du Rhône. You’ve got to climb. That’s right, the great wine in the Rhône is always at elevation, the higher the better.
The incredible estate of Saint Amant, is the highest in the southern Rhône. Here, the windswept vines of Grenache, Syrah and Viognier are 1800 feet, rooted in mineral shale and limestone soil. The combination of organic farming, a super-long growing season, the mineral soil and that dizzying elevation, allows for wine that is hedonistically fruity but light on its feet, the real test of world-class full-bodied red wine. The wine is purple, edging to black to the brim, with an amazing nose of violets, black cherries and spice. The fruit is juicy, complex but finishes dry, fresh and long. Think Chateauneuf in the glass but with a Tuesday night price tag….fantastic.

The perfect accompaniment to a holiday feast or leg of lamb.

Feudo Montoni has been one of the best producers in Italy for literally hundreds of years, most notably for their work with Nero D’Avola grape in Sicily. It’s a gorgeous expression at such a good price. The 2020 “Lagnusa” is the perfect pizza or Thanksgiving wine with juicy black fruits, grippy tannins and a wonderful, fresh and herbaceous finish. Vinous Media gave the wine 92 points and raved, calling it “remarkably fresh yet long, leaving the mouth watering while still resonating on hints of blackberry.” You’re going to love this.

“Vignon’s 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape delivers even more than I hoped for based on a previous sample. Hints of garrigue, roses, cherries and raspberries appear on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied, silky and long, with an intense, almost briny finish. The assemblage is 50% Grenache, 10% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, plus smaller proportions of seven other permitted varieties, while the élevage includes foudres, demi-muids, concrete and wooden tanks, plus terracotta amphorae.”

The new release is here from outstanding winemaking team of Michel Rolland, Charles Thomas, Andy Erickson and David Jelenik. This one always represents one of the best quality-to-price ratios in all of Napa Cab and in the stellar 2021 vintage, this really stands out as one of the best the Valley has to offer. It’s a racy mix of Coombsville fruit from Atlas Peak that absolutely roars out of the bottle. Always one of Napa’s great bargains and a must have even as the price starts to sneak up here a little bit.
It’s no surprise the Wine Advocate has called the Ventoux a “screaming bargain.” Carved off the left bank of the Rhone River, the 2020 Delas Ventoux is a gorgeous medium-bodied wine with wonderful crushed red fruits, a silky mouthfeel, tremendous structure and that signature Rhone spice on the finish. I haven’t had this wine available for a few vintages, but I figure it’s the perfect springtime Red to bring back in the fold!
