With fingers crossed, I am already planning my first trip back to France since 2019. One of my first stops is sure to be at Vincent Ricard to see the jolliest guy in the Touraine. Aside from being a brilliant and passionate winegrower, he’s got an enthusiasm for life, laughing and great food that is second to none.
On my last trip there, that enthusiasm had me holding on for dear life in the back of his Citroën Jumpy as he drove way too fast up a winding dirt road with only one hand casually on the wheel as he turned to excitedly explain to me the cultivation of a certain giant pile of manure. Le merde magique…
Just beyond that pile of magic organic do-do that fertilizes all of the Ricard vineyards, lies a small parcel of old Sauvignon Blanc vines rooted in the rare silex soils more commonly found in Sancerre or Pouilly Fume. The flinty soil lends a more elegant character to the Sauvignon, with a silky, transparent quality that highlights savory and mineral notes rarely found in wine at this price.

It’s an electric white Burgundy, with a limestone-laced aromatic profile of green apple, pear and hazelnut. Refined and high-toned, the pure, delicious fruit that is a hallmark of this terrific vintage, finishes long and fresh, with a mile-long mineral streak.
92 Points (Best Buy), Wine Enthusiast – 90 Points, James Suckling
The winery could never expected their Tuscan Vermentino would become as integral as it has – even 25 years later, it’s still a key piece of the puzzle for Campo Maccione. It’s an unassuming wine with great viscosity and bright, savory flavors that way overdelivers for the price. James Suckling agreed, as did Wine Enthusiast. Suckling gave it a 90 and deemed it “an interesting take on Tuscan Vermentino.” Wine Enthusiast took it up a few notches, attaching a coveted ‘Best Buy’ designate to the wine along with a 92-point review for the wine “with a sophisticated restraint.”
The newly released Riesling Feinherb 2021 is a lively, juicy wine with an elegant bouquet of minerals, wet stone and ripe fruit. On the palate, the wine’s slight off-dry component is beautifully balanced by the steely acidity typical of the Mosel. Because this is freshly released, the fruit is vibrant and succulent and it comes in somewhere between off-dry and semi-sweet. It’s a great example of Riesling, especially at the price.
Stephan Steinmetz is a star in the Mosel wine region. His old vines are rooted in Kimmeridgian limestone, the exact same vein of rock that winds its way from Sancerre through Chablis and Champagne to its final out-cropping here in the Obermosel. His Elbling is glorious — both completely unlike anything I’ve ever had and also eerily familiar. The color is almost clear, some might call it silver. A stunning nose of green apples and lemon peel gives way to fresh pear and bright citrus fruits on the palate. It’s a stunningly focused wine with a healthy dose of minerality and acid zip, not unlike great Sancerre/Chablis and bone dry.
