Richard Jaume makes an absolute knock out old-vine Grenache-Syrah blend from vineyards planted at some of the highest points in the Rhône. The man simply has a knack for making super food-friendly, juicy wines perfect for outdoor dining. The Jaumes have farmed their estate in Vinsobres for well over 100 years now. Their old vines thrive on the mineral soil of Vinsobres, one of my favorite villages for Tuesday night wine in the southern Rhone. For Richard, their wine is all about the fruit, leading to pristine, fresh wines, tailor-made for anyone’s house red and a slam dunk for any kind of meat on the bone.
Their Altitude 420 blend consists of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah, grown on a breezy terrace in “Les Collines.” As one of the four Crus of Vinsobres, the vineyard towers over the medieval village. The wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks, perfectly preserving a wide range of bright red fruit aromas, orange rind and floral flavors that flow from the bottle. In the glass, the wine has a deep royal purple color, almost black at the center. Plenty of secondary garrigue aromatics emerge in the nose, including wild blackberries, ripe cherries, a citrus zest, and dried lavender, making it an ideal match for pizzas with veggie toppings, food from the grill, and most red meats.
It’s a Saturday night quality wine at a Tuesday night price. It’s been a while since I’ve been able to get my hands on this beauty. With their amazing announcement last week of a spot in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list, I made sure I got a few bottles in so that some of you can enjoy this juicy winner.

The new release is here from outstanding winemaking team of Michel Rolland, Charles Thomas, Andy Erickson and David Jelenik. This one always represents one of the best quality-to-price ratios in all of Napa Cab and in the stellar 2021 vintage, this really stands out as one of the best the Valley has to offer. It’s a racy mix of Coombsville fruit from Atlas Peak that absolutely roars out of the bottle. Always one of Napa’s great bargains and a must have even as the price starts to sneak up here a little bit.
The 2021 Napa Valley East side Cuvee is an instant classic. From the first whiff to the moment it hits the lips, its clear that this is a fabulously concentrated, serious wine: black in color, and featuring aromas of cassis, cedar and chocolate-tinged purple fruit. The mouthfeel is plush and voluptuous with a firm, solid finish that speaks to its potential for considerable aging.
Anne Sery describes her Trousse Chemise Cabernets as an ode to the Left Bank and her winemaking roots. It’s a beautiful and fresh Cabernet with aromas that leap from the glass with of black raspberry, violets, and creme de liquor notes. The mouth gives generous amounts of juicy black fruits at the core with hints of baking spice and a smooth, savory finish. This is a terrific partner for just about anything from hard cheese, to poultry, summer salads, you name it!
92 Points, Vinous – 91 Points, Wine Spectator
Feudo Montoni has been one of the best producers in Italy for literally hundreds of years, most notably for their work with Nero D’Avola grape in Sicily. It’s a gorgeous expression at such a good price. The 2020 “Lagnusa” is the perfect pizza or Thanksgiving wine with juicy black fruits, grippy tannins and a wonderful, fresh and herbaceous finish. Vinous Media gave the wine 92 points and raved, calling it “remarkably fresh yet long, leaving the mouth watering while still resonating on hints of blackberry.” You’re going to love this.
