Pizza demands juicy, fresh wine and time and time again, especially on a warm night in August, I find myself reaching for rosé, preferably from the South of France. The last one of the season just hit my cellar, from a world-class producer of Tuesday nighters, Richard Jaume.
His old vines of Grenache and Syrah are precariously rooted in limestone at some of the highest elevations in the Rhône, perfect for making wildly aromatic, bone-dry Rosé that is simply lights out perfect with pizza of any type. I know first hand, the last visit at chez Jaume included a pretty damn good pizza in an ancient stone oven. We drank rosé. You should too.
The 2019 just hit my cellar, it’s a terrific Tuesday nighter, with a killer nose of blood orange, red berries and English garden roses. In the mouth, the fruit is intense, with sappy raspberry, cherry and tangerine flavors, finishing bone dry and lip-smackingly fresh. Get it into your pizza rotation ASAP!

Named ‘Oeil de Perdrix’ (eye of the partridge), Joe grows a special vineyard of Pinot Noir especially for this pink wine, similar to how many of the Roses in Burgundy are made. It’s a 100% Rose of Pinot that Joe lightly whole-cluster presses and then ages in a combination of French Oak and stainless steel. That’s what makes this baby absolutely soar, both in the aromatics and on the palate with red berries, nectarine, and tropical fruits and a cherry/citrus mix. It’s a delight to drink.

The 2022 Hampton Water Rose from the south of France is such an electric wine, people are really going to love it. It’s a lively Rose with tons of personality, with some great minerality, crispness, and bright red fruits. There’s so much energy and tension here as well as a little bit of spice that comes in the end. Everything you’re looking for in a serious Rose.

Domaine Jaume Vinsobres Altitude 420 is an old-vine Grenache-Syrah blend from vineyards planted in Les Collines at some of the highest points in the Rhône. The Jaumes have farmed these dizzying elevations at their estate in Vinsobres for 100+ years. The 2020 is one of his best yet, pristine and fresh, a bowl full of berried-up fruit yet with the tension and length that belies its humble price. Incredible bang for the buck, tailor-made for anyone’s house red, and a slam dunk for any kind of meat on the bone.

There’s a consistency to Pierre Sparr wines that consumers just know they can count on throughout the entire portfolio. The wines deliver aromatics, elegance, clean fruit and are packed with vibrancy. They also happen to be extremely food-friendly, especially in the past few vintages where yields were down but quality rose to an all-time high. This is a bone-dry beauty with layers of citrus fruits, framed by wet stone and mineral character that adds dimension.
