Burgundy is a bit like a haystack too for buyers and consumers alike; a million vineyards, owned by many and produced by even more. To find value, you are essentially looking for that needle.
In the summer of 2015, I found myself way off the rue nationale, driving through the rolling, lush, green hills of the Côtes Chalonnaise to find the estate of François Raquillet. The night before, the sommelier at the restaurant we were in steered towards a brilliant bottle of Bourgogne Rouge from Raquillet and suggested we seek him out. It was worth the trip.
François organically tends around 40 acres of limestone-laden vineyards in the appellation of Mercurey, producing some of the most delicious Pinot Noir I have ever tasted from Burgundy. The fruit quality of his 2017 Bourgogne Rouge is just like that first one I had, downright crunchy. It’s dark and juicy but light on its feet, and incredibly drinkable.
Vinified entirely in oak, this is juicy, berried-up Pinot Noir with a lip-smacking mineral finish that makes it absolutely perfect at any table.

This is a really exciting new release in the collection of single-vineyards from the Wagner Family, and arguably the most interesting one of the bunch. This is the only Pinot Noir in the Caymus collection that has the advantage of being from a natural Pinot Noir haven in the Russian River Valley. Dairyman Vineyard’s proximity to the pacific ocean, with its morning fog and afternoon coastal breezes allows for an even and elongated growing season, with super concentrated and expressive grape clusters that help make this Dijon clone Pinot Noir one that you need.
91 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.

“The 2021 Malbec Reserva, from Vistalba, Lujan de Cuyo, was 60% aged in barrels for 12 months. Purple in color. The nose presents notes of fresh plum and violets, white pepper, strawberry, hints of spice and aromas from the aging process. It’s initially indulgent in the mouth, with good fat, and volume and a velvety texture. The flavors are bold and full-bodied. This 2021 overdelivers at the price.” -Vinous
The secret to Philippe’s tightly wound, complex Pinot Noir is a combo of ancient vines, natural farming techniques, and low yields. The wines are built to age, with incredible tension and length. And the secret to me securing his other-wordly 2017 old-vine Gevry-Chambertin can be chalked up to a great relationship and over a decade supporting superior Burgundian winemaking. The wine is scary good. The nose is wild, filled with spiced dark raspberries, red flowers, and baking spices. The palate is elegant and racy, with a dynamic tension that runs right through its minute-long finish. This is a high-toned, wound-up Pinot, that is starting to hit its prime and is really turning out to be a ‘must-have’ for true Burgundy lovers.
