My time at Jean-Georges opened my eyes to world of fine dining. The economy was flying and there was no place in the city where the truly epic, standard-bearing wines of the world flew off the list with more regularity. Harlan, DRC, Chateau Latour and Dom Perignon might as well have been Tuesday nighters at Jean Georges in that era. For white Burgundy, and specifically, Puligny Montrachet, nothing sold quite like Etienne Sauzet.
25 years later, not much has changed in terms of the demand on Etienne Sauzet. The Big Man has it exactly right, Sauzet creates benchmark wines not only for Puligny Montrachet but for all of Burgundy. Current winemaker, Emilie Boillot, Etienne’s great grand-daughter, has amazingly raised the bar, farming biodynamically, reducing yields, and employing a more rigorous selection of grapes. The resulting wines are nothing short of fantastic and the new releases from Burgundy’s fantastic 2018 are out of this world.
The Bourgogne blanc gives drinkers the opportunity to have the fruit of Burgundy’s all-time great white producers labor at a rare under $50 price tag. And as many of you probably could have guessed, this bottle is probably the best of all the Bourgogne Blancs and really gives wines twice and three times the price a run for its money.

“This is one of the most serious estates in Burgundy. The wines are usually among the very best made….They are textbook white burgundies, brimming with flavor, yet elegant & well balanced”
-Robert M. Parker, Jr., The Wine Advocate
I love the 2017 village Puligny, a rich but racy white Burg with a mineral length that not only shows it is one of the best white wines in the world for fine cuisine but also has the legs to gracefully age for a least a decade.

The newly released 2022 Domaine Laroche Chablis Saint Martin has some big shoes to fill as the last four vintages have earned 92-points or higher, but the early indications are that this is line with previous vintages if not even a little bit ahead at this stage. The problem is – there’s almost none to go around with much smaller yields. Still this is beautiful and crisp, with good focus, energy and depth. I get the signature green fruits on the nose, with some Asian pear, and a hint of jasmine blossom. There’s a beautiful mineral streak that highlights this one. It’s a fantastic White Burg for the price.
It’s hard to beat a great value white wine and this one is a at least a cut above the rest. One prominant industry insider called the 2022 edition, “the best white wine by any within $20/cs of this price.” It’s super crisp with a great mineral streak, and was carefully picked by hand when the temperature is coolest and is kept cool all the way into the press. From there, the effect of the mineral soil takes over, providing great finesse and freshness in every bottle. This white blend has great backbone and a lot of juicy fruit coming through behind aromas of flowers and stone fruits. At this price, it’s a no brainer.
Elena Walch’s newly released 2022 Pinot Bianco continues to be the best example of Pinot Blanc anywhere. She’s the undisputed queen. There’s so much energy in this new release. Super light in color, with a busy nose that boasts ripe aromas of citrus, granny smith apple with a hint of freshly mowed grass. Made entirely in stainless steel, the wine is expressive, fresh and finishes as clean and tight as can be. Definitely will continue the run of 90+ scores once this one is reviewed.
Every year, this wine has proven to be a Nicholas Wines staple. The newly released 2022 Frenzy Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is a fabulous value white wine, loaded with green apples, pears and white peaches plus a hint of spice. It’s juicy and fresh, the perfect cocktail hour white. It’s what is referred to as the perfect ‘pool wine’. It’s great paired with just about anything or just enjoyed on its own.
