Jean-Claude Janin’s brilliant estate in southern Burgundy, Terres de Chatenay is great farming of old vines on limestone soils.
I met Jean-Claude years ago when he was delivering grapes huge domaine in the Mâcon where I was tasting with a friend. My buddy introduced me to Jean Claude as a brilliant farmer that sold most of his grapes but made a little bit of wine for his himself. “A little wine, for a tiny domaine”, he humbly said. This peaked my interest, I know this game. I struck up a conversation as best I could with Jean Claude and asked if I could taste his wine. As I suspected, he, of course, kept the best stuff for himself. His white Burgundies were as good as any I tasted on that trip and they were about half the price.
Years, later, Terre de Chatenay has developed cult status here at Nicholas Wines; the wines are uncommonly fine, delivering incredible quality:price ratio. The 2018 Mâcon Peronne is no exception, stainless-steel fermented Chardonnay, pure of fruit with electric minerality. Long on the palate, crisp in its finish, this is wine to drink with anything from the sea or Thanksgiving dinner.

It’s a great choice for a house white, perfect with so many things, roasted chicken, flaky white fish and just by itself as the perfect apertif.

“The 2018 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard marks the beginning of winemaker Joe Nielsen’s tenure at the winery. Pouring a medium yellow with a light golden hue, it’s most reserved of the flight aromatically at the moment, with yellow chamomile flowers, ripe peach, beeswax, and white flowers. Full-bodied, it retains excellent tension and focus on the palate, with apricot, orange zest, and a savory finish with a bit of spice. I suspect this will come around and open with time. Sonoma Coast is well-known as a cool-climate region, perfect for growing Chardonnay. That’s why it’s such a big deal for Route Stock to transition over for the first time from Carnernos over to here. The newly released 2022 beams freshness and comes packed with a delightful energy in its youth. It has a pale straw color with lime hues. The aromas are of honeysuckle, orange blossom and creme brulee with layers of vanilla and a hint of toffee. The palate is lively yet soft with flavors of lemon cream pie and merange.
One of the best places to look for great Tuesday nighters are the sandy, limestone-laden hills of Asti. And within Asti, there is no white wine calling card that holds a candle to Moscato. Here it is king. Gianni Doglia naturally farms a tiny estate in the picturesque hamlet of Castagnole Lanze. His Moscato is the product of old vines, vinfied without oak to preserve its incredible fruit. The 2016 vintage in Napa was nearly perfect for winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val). With ideal weather all throughout harvest, he crafted the Faustini Money Road Chardonnay off the famous vineyard located in the coveted Oakville AVA. The picturesque vineyard off Oakville Crossroad is platinum rated, known for its ideal combination of soil & climate and the big A list names that routinely source fruit. Kian’s Money Road Chard is still youthful despite having a few years of age, probably as a result of its 18 months of slumber in 1/4 new Oak.
