Jean-Claude Janin’s brilliant estate in southern Burgundy, Terres de Chatenay is great farming of old vines on limestone soils.
I met Jean-Claude years ago when he was delivering grapes huge domaine in the Mâcon where I was tasting with a friend. My buddy introduced me to Jean Claude as a brilliant farmer that sold most of his grapes but made a little bit of wine for his himself. “A little wine, for a tiny domaine”, he humbly said. This peaked my interest, I know this game. I struck up a conversation as best I could with Jean Claude and asked if I could taste his wine. As I suspected, he, of course, kept the best stuff for himself. His white Burgundies were as good as any I tasted on that trip and they were about half the price.
Years, later, Terre de Chatenay has developed cult status here at Nicholas Wines; the wines are uncommonly fine, delivering incredible quality:price ratio. The 2018 Mâcon Peronne is no exception, stainless-steel fermented Chardonnay, pure of fruit with electric minerality. Long on the palate, crisp in its finish, this is wine to drink with anything from the sea or Thanksgiving dinner.

It’s a great choice for a house white, perfect with so many things, roasted chicken, flaky white fish and just by itself as the perfect apertif.

“The 2018 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard marks the beginning of winemaker Joe Nielsen’s tenure at the winery. Pouring a medium yellow with a light golden hue, it’s most reserved of the flight aromatically at the moment, with yellow chamomile flowers, ripe peach, beeswax, and white flowers. Full-bodied, it retains excellent tension and focus on the palate, with apricot, orange zest, and a savory finish with a bit of spice. I suspect this will come around and open with time. The new 2022 vintage has arrived and it’s beaming with energy and pure stone fruits. This is a beauty as always.
The newly released Riesling Feinherb 2021 is a lively, juicy wine with an elegant bouquet of minerals, wet stone and ripe fruit. On the palate, the wine’s slight off-dry component is beautifully balanced by the steely acidity typical of the Mosel. Because this is freshly released, the fruit is vibrant and succulent and it comes in somewhere between off-dry and semi-sweet. It’s a great example of Riesling, especially at the price.
