The small appellation of Côteaux du Giennois produces tiny quantities of wine with its 200 hectares of clay-limestone terrain extending across 50 kilometers just north of Pouilly-Fumé and directly across the Loire River from Sancerre.
While the appellation produces tiny quantities of wine, it stretches 50 kilometers in length with small parcels spread over 200 hectares of clay-limestone and silex dominant terrain. In the Giennois, Sauvignon Blanc reigns supreme and shares some of the the clean, flinty, mineral characteristics of nearby Pouilly-Fumé.
This is the absolutely perfect location for winemakers looking to grow Sauvignon Blanc – with all the limestone, silex, clay mix you could dream of, imparting all kinds of gorgeous flinty, mineral notes. And for consumers, it’s the ultimate package – a few meters in any direction, and the price tag would instantly double – instead it’s an insane value that sticks out like a sore thumb.

The newly released 2022 Domaine Laroche Chablis Saint Martin has some big shoes to fill as the last four vintages have earned 92-points or higher, but the early indications are that this is line with previous vintages if not even a little bit ahead at this stage. The problem is – there’s almost none to go around with much smaller yields. Still this is beautiful and crisp, with good focus, energy and depth. I get the signature green fruits on the nose, with some Asian pear, and a hint of jasmine blossom. There’s a beautiful mineral streak that highlights this one. It’s a fantastic White Burg for the price.
The 2019 Composition Chardonnay is stunningly complex. The nose is an impressive balance of floral notes, bright citrus, and pome fruits – a little bit rose laced into fresh, ripe pear. The location of the two parcels adds to the flavor dynamics. One block faces east towards Mt Hood and basks in the early sunlight; necessary for an extended growing season and complete maturity. The second, the North Block sits much higher in elevation upon a thin layer of soil and contributes delightful acidity. With those elements combined, the wine is stunning and unlike anything I’ve really laid my hands on from Oregon.
Elena Walch’s newly released 2022 Pinot Bianco continues to be the best example of Pinot Blanc anywhere. She’s the undisputed queen. There’s so much energy in this new release. Super light in color, with a busy nose that boasts ripe aromas of citrus, granny smith apple with a hint of freshly mowed grass. Made entirely in stainless steel, the wine is expressive, fresh and finishes as clean and tight as can be. Definitely will continue the run of 90+ scores once this one is reviewed.
93 Points, Decanter
Of course, the Trefethens’ Chardonnay history is well documented. It dates back to the Judgement of Paris and the 1979 Wine World Olympics hosted by the French publication Gault & Millau, where their Chardonnay finished first overall. That pursuit of excellence is still just as strong as ever, as evidenced by the family’s most recent Chardonnay bottling. It’s a 93-point beauty that absolutely dazzles, especially at its incredibly modest price tag.
