Domaine de Beaurenard has been making upper echelon Chateaneuf du Pape for years, but I hadn’t had a Rasteau from them until I ordered it at Balthazar. Oooo was it good. This biodynamic baby Chateneauf danced in the glass with inviting aromas of black cherry, licorice and blackberry pie with a full body of silky supple fruit that all harmonized together beautifully. When I tell you it was the perfect compliment to the steak tartare, I mean it was a match made in heaven. I had to get a second glass before I finished the dish.
Upon getting home, I did a little homework. Turns out the wine experts had already gotten to it, with two 90+ scores to its credit. First came from The Wine Advocate who declared, “this biodynamically run estate’s 2018 Rasteau is a solid alternative for much less money”. Then came the 92-point review from Jeb Dunnuck who called the 80% Grenache, 17% syrah, 3% mourvedre blend, “terrific” as well as noting, “ with classic pepper, earth, and spice notes, it should easily be an outstanding wine.” It sure is.

92 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
In addition to their brilliant Chateauneuf du Papes, this estate makes two terrific Rasteau. Their 2018 Rasteau offers a medium to full-bodied, fruit-forward, balanced style as well as the more blue fruit character that’s common in the vintage. With classic pepper, earth, and spice notes, it should easily be an outstanding wine.
90 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
While based in Châteaneuf du Pape, this biodynamically run estate’s 2018 Rasteau is a solid alternative for much less money. A blend of 80% Grenache, 17% Syrah and 3% Mourvèdre, it offers scents of sun-warmed stones, hints of garrigue and bold flavors of black cherries and blackberries. It’s medium to full-bodied and supple, with a round, silky feel on the palate. Hints of dark chocolate and a cocoa powder-like texture mark the lengthy finish.

92 Pts, James Suckling – 90 Pts, Vinous
This offer is really an easy one. Two of the greatest wine pioneers from two different hemispheres (Baron Eric Rothschild from ‘Chateau Lafite Rothschild’ and Nicolas Catena from ‘Catena’) join forces to make a delicious, Bordeaux style Malbec, crafted nearly 4600 feet above sea level and offered for a fantastic price. This beauty that Vinous called, “remarkably intense” is a case-buy all the way every single vintage released. Only 30 btls to sell though… sorry in advance!
90-92 Pts, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 91 Pts (Editors’ Choice), Wine Enthusiast – 91 Pts, Decanter
The wines get consistent high praise but 2018 is truly something special. 90-92 from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. 91 points and an Editor’s Choice designation from Wine Enthusiast. 91 more from Decanter who provides “There is so much to enjoy in the smaller appellations this year. Drinking Window 2022 – 2031” and another 90 point score from James Suckling. This is a home run value – especially for the price.
This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.
92 Points, Vinous – 91 Points, Wine Spectator
Feudo Montoni has been one of the best producers in Italy for literally hundreds of years, most notably for their work with Nero D’Avola grape in Sicily. It’s a gorgeous expression at such a good price. The 2020 “Lagnusa” is the perfect pizza or Thanksgiving wine with juicy black fruits, grippy tannins and a wonderful, fresh and herbaceous finish. Vinous Media gave the wine 92 points and raved, calling it “remarkably fresh yet long, leaving the mouth watering while still resonating on hints of blackberry.” You’re going to love this.
