Few wineries carry the same weight in the Rhone as the name Delas. The Delas family began making wine in the Rhone Valley in the early 1800’s, and developed quite a reputation over the years. But everything changed when Jacque Grange came aboard and the winery went from one of the better wineries in the Rhone to one of the best wineries in France and beyond.
Jacques Grange is a Burgundian winemaker who spent years under the tutelage of the famous Michel Chapoutier before he joined the Delas team. His impact was immediate, with Robert Parker Jr. himself writing, “Delas has joined the ranks of the finest Rhoney Valley producers. The impetus for the change is Jacques Grange.”
Grange doesn’t do it alone though, together he and Claire Darnaud, a star in her own right, manage a winemaking team at a winemaking facility that is second to none. If you’ve ever been to Delas, it’s stupid nice. Truthfully, it looks more like a winemaking museum than a working facility– but for a winery producing some of the best Cote-Rotie, Hermitage, Chateaneuf-du-Pape and St. Joseph, with dozens of skus across both whites and reds, I guess they need the space.
The beauty of Delas is in the value of the wines. Ranging anywhere from $10 all the way up to $300/btl, the team at Delas puts the same care into the Ventoux as they do their signature Côte-Rôtie ‘La Landonne’ 2018. It doesn’t matter, everything is made to be fresh, structured and unique to the terroir.

90 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Xavier Vignon’s brand spanking new CDR 100% is a thing of beauty. It’s already got a blessing from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate who described this wine as, “Full-bodied, concentrated and supple”. This is a gorgeous and intricate blend that features all of the Southern Rhone appellations. This year, the blend was 40% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, 7% Cinsault, 7% Marselan, 6% Terret Noir. Nobody can do it like the mad scientist, Xavier Vignon.
92 Points, James Suckling
Since the late 1990’s Penner-Ash has been viewed as one of Oregon’s top wineries making gorgeous wines in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. In the 2021 vintage considered to be one of Oregon’s all-time great years, the 2021 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir that Lynn crafted is gorgeous, a silky tightly woven number that mixes red and black fruits with some sage and baking spices and a savory finish. It’s got some nice weight to it and structure which suggests it’ll age well for the next 10-15 years though it’s already drinking beautifully in its youth.
100 Pts, International Wine Report – 98 Pts, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 98 Pts, James Suckling
“The 2020 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is truly sensational. It begins with striking aromas of fresh blackberries, blueberries and dark plums that are laced with fresh spring florals, mocha, sweet exotic spices, graphite and gravel nuances all taking shape. The palate is full-bodied and displays a remarkable combination of power and elegance throughout. This is beautifully structured and extremely expressive, as it possesses outstanding depth and concentration all they way through the long, finessed finish. Year after year, the Columbia Valley Cabernet is one of the most impressive wines, and there is no exception here, as it combines all the wonderful qualities of the 2020 vintage from Quilceda Creek into one expression. This is fantastic already and readers will be in for a real treat, as this simply marvelous wine will continue to deliver the goods for years to come.”
Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.
