Many of you have raved about his Oregon Pinots that have pretty much become a Nicholas Wines exclusive and Bertrand has been very generous with his pricing for his ‘Nicholas friends’ (that’s you guys).
But Bertrand called me last week, asking me(?!?) for a favor. It seems the ambitious winemaker just couldn’t help himself and while working on his Oregon Pinot Project, he decided to begin work on a clandestine Chardonnay.
The winemaker responsible for the 11-thousand dollar per bottle DRC Montrachet just fell in love with a tiny parcel of Oregon Chardonnay, atop Winter’s Hill in the Dundee Hills and adjacent from Domaine Serene. “With breezy, cool nights, it bore a surprising resemblance to my favorite Vosne-Romanée parcels. I couldn’t help myself. Just four barrels. What’s the harm?”
Well – the harm was he didn’t necessarily have the blessing of the brass back home and they didn’t really want their five figure per bottle winemaker lending his hands to a Chardonnay off the books.

The 2019 Composition Chardonnay is stunningly complex. The nose is an impressive balance of floral notes, bright citrus, and pome fruits – a little bit rose laced into fresh, ripe pear. The location of the two parcels adds to the flavor dynamics. One block faces east towards Mt Hood and basks in the early sunlight; necessary for an extended growing season and complete maturity. The second, the North Block sits much higher in elevation upon a thin layer of soil and contributes delightful acidity. With those elements combined, the wine is stunning and unlike anything I’ve really laid my hands on from Oregon.
Gold Medal (Best in Show), 2023 Mundus Vini International Tasting
The area has also been isolated from the rest of Spain for generations, which has kept the wine prices far lower than wines of this quality would be anywhere else in the world. That’s why, despite having the Torres family name on the bottle and the consistent huge press (including the Gold Medal & Best in Show at the 2023 Mundus Vini International Wine Awards in Germany), these wines can still be scooped up for under $20/bottle. It’s like the Sancerre pricing of yesteryear.
This one is so fruit friendly and inviting and also the perfect treat for some Italian food or fresh fish. It leads with beautiful notes of stone fruit, lemon, lime, and some acacia flowers. It’s delicate, but still full on the mouth, with good structure, freshness, and intensity.
This is a special wine from a small and incredibly hardworking family producer. The wine is drawn off a 0.26-hectare parcel of roughly 45-year old vines in the lieu dit ‘Les Vireux’ which borders its very expensive neighbor, Meursault lieu dit Les Vireuils. The east facing slope and shallow stony soils of this parcel account for a gorgeous and rich expression with juicy and bright lemon-lime and white peach flavors that carry through a long, intensely mineral finish.
