Perhaps no estate produces better white bordeaux than Domaine de Chavalier in Graves. Since 1983, Olivier has run the winemaking show at Domaine de Chavalier. But after nearly 35 years of doing the same thing, he also took on winemaking duties at the great Chateau Giraud, the well-known Premier Cru Classé producer of the sweet white wine Sauternes.
But then he decided to take on a vanity project – something that would shock the wine world. Enter Clos des Lunes. With it, his mission is clear: create the best dry white wine in Bordeaux, or don’t do anything at all. But the finances didn’t pencil out so well. Take grapes that were destined to easily craft some one of the most desirable dessert wine in the world which easily fetches three figures – and instead create a white wine masterpiece for less than $25?!?!
Bernard knows he has his doubters but doesn’t care; he’s excited for this new chapter which he says is unlike any other in his journey. His object is crystal clear: create a fine dry white wine that will with time become part of the same legend that describes the sweet wines of Sauternes.
Crafting wine off an ancient vineyard in Sauternes, Bernard relies on an intimate relationship with the Bordeaux terroir he knows so well and knowing the precise time to pick each vintage (prior to noble rot setting in). In the exceptional 2018 vintage, Oliver Bernard’s ‘Lune d’Argent’ is a knockout. Both the Wine Spectator and James Suckling echoed my own sentiments – and each gave 93 points.

90-93 Pts, Wine Spectator
Intense white peach, jasmine and fennel notes stream through, with a flash of herb on the still-tight finish. Shows very nice length and focus.
92-93 Pts, James Suckling
Brightness and serenity to this white with lemon rind and pear skin, highlighting the cooked-apple character. Medium to full body, bright acidity and a vivid finish.

Gold Medal (Best in Show), 2023 Mundus Vini International Tasting
The area has also been isolated from the rest of Spain for generations, which has kept the wine prices far lower than wines of this quality would be anywhere else in the world. That’s why, despite having the Torres family name on the bottle and the consistent huge press (including the Gold Medal & Best in Show at the 2023 Mundus Vini International Wine Awards in Germany), these wines can still be scooped up for under $20/bottle. It’s like the Sancerre pricing of yesteryear.
95 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
“The 2018 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard marks the beginning of winemaker Joe Nielsen’s tenure at the winery. Pouring a medium yellow with a light golden hue, it’s most reserved of the flight aromatically at the moment, with yellow chamomile flowers, ripe peach, beeswax, and white flowers. Full-bodied, it retains excellent tension and focus on the palate, with apricot, orange zest, and a savory finish with a bit of spice. I suspect this will come around and open with time. Drink 2024-2030.” -Jeb Dunnuck
93 Points, Decanter
Of course, the Trefethens’ Chardonnay history is well documented. It dates back to the Judgement of Paris and the 1979 Wine World Olympics hosted by the French publication Gault & Millau, where their Chardonnay finished first overall. That pursuit of excellence is still just as strong as ever, as evidenced by the family’s most recent Chardonnay bottling. It’s a 93-point beauty that absolutely dazzles, especially at its incredibly modest price tag.
From just west of Sancerre, Vincent’s vines are tended organically in flint-laden, calcareous soil which lends a great brightness to the wine. The wine is crisp and aromatic Sauvignon, and is a superb choice for a “cocktail” wine, as an aperitif or to accompany just about anything from sea.
