Perfectly situated in the northwest corner of St. Émilion, near the border shared with Pomerol is the gorgeous Chateau Chauvin. The Grand cru classe estate spanning 37 acres is sandwiched between neighbors Chateau Cheval Blanc and La Dominique with the entire vineyard planted on a single block.
The Chateau is owned by one of the most famous and powerful women in Bordeaux, Sylvie Cazes, who became the first woman to hold the position as president of the Union de Grand Crus de Bordeaux in 2012. On top of that and owning and managing Chateau Chauvin with her brother, Jean Michel (founder/owner Lynch Bages), she also owns the 3-star Michelin restaurant, Le Chapon Fin.
This wine is the flagship wine, the first from Chateau Chauvin and the big brother to the 2015 Folie de Chauvin that we saw a few weeks ago. The 2016 Chauvin has offers up dark fruited and sage medley aromas with excellent precision and structure and a finish that lasts longs and reminds you of the gripps tannins. This one is showing really nicely now, but also has the ability to last 15 years easily.

Easily one of the most impressive of the lineup, just bursting with fruit and power – tight firm tannins giving clear support and backbone. This is a fairly Left Bank feel for a St Emilion, perhaps from its dash of Cabernet Sauvignon, and it successfully delivers a recognisable Chauvin signature. A beautiful vibrant violet rim suggests this is going to age well.

Blackberry, blueberry and floral aromas follow through to a full body, tight and chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Drink in 2023. A château to watch in the future.

“A juicy intensity with bright red fruits, delicate and alive in the glass – friendly but with a salty liquorice kick that gives it some seriousness. Lean and direct but so polished and clean on the finish. A touch of lingering heat at the end but this has vibrancy and is well structured with clear bite and power.” -Decanter

“The 2018 Ronan by Client is medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it has fragrant notes of black and red cherries and blackberry preserves with cinnamon toast and fallen leaves. Winemaker Pascal Sirat consistently puts out some of the best value Bordeaux in the region but he may have outdone himself in what was a stellar 2019 vintage throughout the region. Just south of Pomerol, the vines at Panchille borrow deep in the soil. The resulting wines are ripe but fresh, with an aromatic complexity and stony finish usually reserved for wine twice the price. Daniel Boulud tells me it’s been the hottest bottle of wine at Bar Boulud for over a month, so I figured I’d better hurry up and secure my allocation! Don’t miss it.

“Unwinding in the glass with aromas of sweet blackberries and raspberries mingled with hints of rose petal and spices, the 2020 Mondot is medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with a pure, seamless core of vibrant fruit and a long, succulent finish. Derived from Merlot growing on recently acquired vineyards on Saint-Émilion’s limestone plateau, some 40% of the blend is matured in tank, with the rest in once-used barriques.” -Parker’s Wine Advocate
