I’m bringing the heat once again from the Left Bank and the outstanding 2018 vintage, one which wine critic James Suckling described as a beautifully structured vintage with ripe fruit and potent tannins but perhaps better later summarized into a single word: “exceptional”.
Bordeaux expert Neil Martin who spent many a year covering the region for The Wine Advocate before taking a similar role at Vinous looked in-depth at the 2018 vintage and offered that it was “a wellspring of wines of exceptional quality and unbeatable prices at decent quantities.”
He went on to name some of the Cru Bourgeois from the entire vintage and at the top of his list was today’s wine, the 2018 Chateau Prieure de Beyzac Haut-Medoc. With incredibly gravelly, clay limestone soil, the tiny, swanky producer is able to make some staggering Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
Clearly the wine made an enormous impression with Martin, who lobbed a 92-point score on a wine he deemed, “absolutely superb.” James Suckling sealed it’s terrific value with a 91-point score of his own.

92 Points, Vinous
The 2018 Prieuré de Beyzac has a really lovely bouquet of perfumed red cherries and wild strawberry and well integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, pinpoint acidity and great precision toward the finish. This is one of the outstanding Cru Bourgeois of the vintage. Absolutely superb.
91 Points, James Suckling
Aromas of stewed blackberries, dried violets, walnuts and dark chocolate. It’s a medium to full-bodied wine with firm, chalky tannins. Chewy and well structured. Try it from 2023.

This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.

“The 2020 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is truly sensational. It begins with striking aromas of fresh blackberries, blueberries and dark plums that are laced with fresh spring florals, mocha, sweet exotic spices, graphite and gravel nuances all taking shape. The palate is full-bodied and displays a remarkable combination of power and elegance throughout. This is beautifully structured and extremely expressive, as it possesses outstanding depth and concentration all they way through the long, finessed finish. Year after year, the Columbia Valley Cabernet is one of the most impressive wines, and there is no exception here, as it combines all the wonderful qualities of the 2020 vintage from Quilceda Creek into one expression. This is fantastic already and readers will be in for a real treat, as this simply marvelous wine will continue to deliver the goods for years to come.”
This is Joe Wagner and Quilt’s inaugural Red blend called Threadcount. It is a total knockout at the price point for this style of wine. It’s a big voluptuous wine and very fruit forward. The nose is straight up dark chocolate dipped raspberries and it tastes of fresh-baked blueberry pie, spice, and a touch of toffee. It’s the kind of quality blend that you’ve come to expect from the family behind Caymus.
92 Points, Vinous – 91 Points, Wine Spectator
Feudo Montoni has been one of the best producers in Italy for literally hundreds of years, most notably for their work with Nero D’Avola grape in Sicily. It’s a gorgeous expression at such a good price. The 2020 “Lagnusa” is the perfect pizza or Thanksgiving wine with juicy black fruits, grippy tannins and a wonderful, fresh and herbaceous finish. Vinous Media gave the wine 92 points and raved, calling it “remarkably fresh yet long, leaving the mouth watering while still resonating on hints of blackberry.” You’re going to love this.
