Chateau Montelena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

Categories , ,

This one is pretty simple. We were given the incredibly rare opportunity to raid directly from the cellar of one of the most famous wineries in Napa, California, or anywhere on the planet.  Today, Chateau Montelena — the iconic Napa brand known for being one of the best wineries in America for over 125 years is offering us up Library Cabernet selections at unbelievable prices.

The 2008 vintage in Napa Valley was a good one, but one with very low yields. Without as much big, juicy fruit to fruit from, legendary winemaker Bo Barrett opted for a different route, one that didn’t wow critics but has paid off handsomely for collectors. If Ridge Montebello is more your style than Caymus Special Select, the 2008 is the one in the group you’ll want to snag a few bottles to stash away. This one still has great ageability and should drink well for another 15-25 years.

92 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a gorgeous, mid-weight wine laced with mint, cassis, sweet herbs and tobacco. It is an understated, gracious wine from start to finish. This is a relatively approachable vintage for the Estate. It shows tons of finesse and mid-palate generosity while maintaining a medium-bodied personality. Today it is quite young, although it is drinking well. Readers who prefer more tertiary notes will want to cellar the wine for at least a few years. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2028.
92 Points, Wine Spectator
Old-school, but well-done, this is tight and firm, showing a dense, balanced mix of dried currant, mineral, cedar, cigar box and tobacco flavors. Ends with good depth, range of flavor and tannins. Best from 2013 through 2023.
