Despite how successful the 2015s and 2016s ended up, 2018 was a miracle from the get go. Winemakers knew as early as August that we were all in for the vintage of a lifetime. Chateau Lafleur winemaker, Baptiste Guinaudeau said the 2018’s were so good, “they are like flying carpets.” James Suckling dulled out three perfect 100-point scores with another ten receiving 100 point potential.
In what is shaping out to be a year for big expressive wines for Bordeaux, the Haut-Brisson perfectly straddles the line of brute force and finesse. A deep purple color with aromas of blue and black fruits, cedar, baking spices with flavors of blueberry, plum, cocoa and snickerdoodle. It’s tightly woven with silky tannins which bodes well for the aging potential of this St. Emilion beauty as well.
An outrageously good bottle, the price for this wine is straight up robbery. Without the same name recognition as their big boy neighbors, this 95-96 point stunner checks in at 1/3 of the price of most of the competition. For an outstanding Right Bank Bordeaux which can be drunk in its youth or enjoyed slowly over the next decade plus, this is a deal you don’t want to miss.

95-96 Points, James Suckling
This is a very powerful and structured Haut-Brisson, showing incredible depth and richness. Full-bodied and layered with incredible depth and purity. Layers of fruit and tannin. Best ever.

95 Points, James Suckling – 94 Points, Wine Spectator – 93 Points, Wine Enthusiast
The new release is here from outstanding winemaking team of Michel Rolland, Charles Thomas, Andy Erickson and David Jelenik. This one always represents one of the best quality-to-price ratios in all of Napa Cab and in the stellar 2021 vintage, this really stands out as one of the best the Valley has to offer. It’s a racy mix of Coombsville fruit from Atlas Peak that absolutely roars out of the bottle. Always one of Napa’s great bargains and a must have even as the price starts to sneak up here a little bit.
90-92 Pts, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 91 Pts (Editors’ Choice), Wine Enthusiast – 91 Pts, Decanter
The wines get consistent high praise but 2018 is truly something special. 90-92 from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. 91 points and an Editor’s Choice designation from Wine Enthusiast. 91 more from Decanter who provides “There is so much to enjoy in the smaller appellations this year. Drinking Window 2022 – 2031” and another 90 point score from James Suckling. This is a home run value – especially for the price.
93 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate – 93 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
“Vignon’s 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape delivers even more than I hoped for based on a previous sample. Hints of garrigue, roses, cherries and raspberries appear on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied, silky and long, with an intense, almost briny finish. The assemblage is 50% Grenache, 10% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, plus smaller proportions of seven other permitted varieties, while the élevage includes foudres, demi-muids, concrete and wooden tanks, plus terracotta amphorae.”
Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.
