The most respected wine reviewer in the world, Robert Parker Jr. sat down to try the 2010 Canon La Gaffeliere in 2013. He absolutely loved the wine, as was evident by his glowing 95-pt score and declaring the 2010 vintage was, “An absolutely spectacular success once again from proprietor Stephan von Niepper” who continues to “fashion some of the most consistently outstanding wines in Bordeaux.” Specifically, Parker, Jr. loved the mouthfeel of the wine, writing it was “dense and full-bodied, with stunning concentration, purity, texture and length.”
The high-praise for the Right Bank chateau in Saint Emilion certainly didn’t stop there. A few weeks after Robert Parker’s review, the Wine Spectator, who had already bestowed a 96-pt score on the wine, rated it the #2 wine in their annual Top 100 Wines of the Year edition. They determined that the superb 2010 bottling from Stephan von Nipper satisfied all three of these important factors that made it the 2nd best wine in the world from that year:
Quality-driven
Fair Price
Exceptional ageability
All of that would have been enough to feature the gorgeous 2010 Canon La Gaffeliere bottling. The chateau being only one of 18 wineries in Saint Emilion with a grand cru classe designation is probably enough merit alone. However, the reason Canon La Gaffliere hits your inbox this morning comes courtesy of the Wine Advocate and their report this month, “Bordeaux: 2010 — Ten years on”. In the report on March 5th, Bordeaux Chief Editor, Lisa Perrotti-Brown decided to outpoint her former boss and give the Chateau La Gaffeliere a 96 point score. She also wrote probably one of my favorite, most accurate descriptions I’ve seen to date: “Full-bodied, the palate is built like a brick house.” I couldn’t have said it better myself! Hey, maybe this wine can play guard for the Giants…

Deep garnet in color, the 2010 Canon la Gaffeliere delivers classic plum preserves, boysenberries and cigar box scents with wafts of underbrush, dried roses and cinnamon stick. Full-bodied, the palate is built like a brick house with a solid line of grainy tannins and racy freshness supporting the dense fruit, finishing with compelling purity and great length. This wine shows wonderfully exotic tapenade, licorice, Christmas fruitcake, cedar wood, blackberry and sweet cherry notes in its strikingly provocative aromatics. On the palate, the wine is dense and full-bodied, with stunning concentration, purity, texture and length. It is full-bodied, silky smooth and seems to have more in common with the 2009 than one might expect, although the freshness and tannin levels are slightly more elevated. Drink it over the next 20+ years. An absolutely spectacular success once again from proprietor Stephan von Niepperg. Gilles Pauquet is the consultant and has done an exemplary job with this particular estate. Feb. 27th, 2013, Robert Parker, Jr.

This takes the power of the vintage and puts it in its pocket for later, preferring instead to let mouthwatering briar, loganberry, mulberry and blackberry fruit strut its way forward, enlivened with roasted wood spice and supported by suavely but thoroughly embedded iron-tinged structure. Should cruise for two decades. Best from 2016 through 2035.

And at $129/btl, this may sound strange but I’m telling you… this baby is one of our best bargains you’ll see all year.

100 Pts, International Wine Report – 98 Pts, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 98 Pts, James Suckling
“The 2020 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is truly sensational. It begins with striking aromas of fresh blackberries, blueberries and dark plums that are laced with fresh spring florals, mocha, sweet exotic spices, graphite and gravel nuances all taking shape. The palate is full-bodied and displays a remarkable combination of power and elegance throughout. This is beautifully structured and extremely expressive, as it possesses outstanding depth and concentration all they way through the long, finessed finish. Year after year, the Columbia Valley Cabernet is one of the most impressive wines, and there is no exception here, as it combines all the wonderful qualities of the 2020 vintage from Quilceda Creek into one expression. This is fantastic already and readers will be in for a real treat, as this simply marvelous wine will continue to deliver the goods for years to come.”
92 Points, Vinous – 91 Points, Wine Spectator
Feudo Montoni has been one of the best producers in Italy for literally hundreds of years, most notably for their work with Nero D’Avola grape in Sicily. It’s a gorgeous expression at such a good price. The 2020 “Lagnusa” is the perfect pizza or Thanksgiving wine with juicy black fruits, grippy tannins and a wonderful, fresh and herbaceous finish. Vinous Media gave the wine 92 points and raved, calling it “remarkably fresh yet long, leaving the mouth watering while still resonating on hints of blackberry.” You’re going to love this.
Not Eligible for Futher Discount-From famed winemaker, Robert Foley comes an absolute delight of a bottle of wine. A seamless Bordeaux blend of 80% Cabernet, 17% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot that is incredibly smoothly now but should have another decade easy of prime drinking. It is the definition of a Saturday Night bottle of wine. One to cherish for a special occasion.
Anne Sery describes her Trousse Chemise Cabernets as an ode to the Left Bank and her winemaking roots. It’s a beautiful and fresh Cabernet with aromas that leap from the glass with of black raspberry, violets, and creme de liquor notes. The mouth gives generous amounts of juicy black fruits at the core with hints of baking spice and a smooth, savory finish. This is a terrific partner for just about anything from hard cheese, to poultry, summer salads, you name it!
