If you don’t remember, here’s how the Chad Project works. Wine making is an incredibly cashflow poor business. Money is laid out for grape contracts, barrels then glass, labels, many months to years before a single dollar flows in for the vintage.
Chad works with some of the top wineries in the country – offering cash for what’s in the barrel and a promise to never disclose his exact vineyard sources in exchange for 50% or more off the usual prices.
2019 is Chad’s best so far and given what happened with the wildfires in 2020, it may be his last for several years. While prices are already skyrocketing throughout the valley – we were already locked and loaded with CHAD for this season!
A fantastic compliment for pretty much whatever food you can throw at it, the 2019 is absolutely bristling with energy and crunchy red fruits. It’s refined and elegant with a cola finish that also flashes delicately woven, smooth tannins.

The wine is very fine aromatically, with a high-toned, black cherry nose kissed with just a touch of spice. The fruit is absolutely pure Pinot, bright and vibrant. For the price, it’s absolutely killer Pinot.

The newly released Fiancetto Howell Mt. Cabernet is a dream – a gorgeous, elegant dark-fruited Cabernet Sauvignon that is it picks up time in the glass, unfurls its full signature of cedar laced cassis nose and mid palate of chocolate-covered cherries and savory spices. Only four palates of this (224 cases) were made off a gorgeous, sprawling high elevation spot 1500 feet above sea level. It’s full and plush and finishes fresh and oh so long. The price is crazy for Howell Mountain Cabernet but that’s what Ry Richards and Fiancetto is all about.

“The 2021 Malbec Reserva, from Vistalba, Lujan de Cuyo, was 60% aged in barrels for 12 months. Purple in color. The nose presents notes of fresh plum and violets, white pepper, strawberry, hints of spice and aromas from the aging process. It’s initially indulgent in the mouth, with good fat, and volume and a velvety texture. The flavors are bold and full-bodied. This 2021 overdelivers at the price.” -Vinous
Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.
This is Joe Wagner and Quilt’s inaugural Red blend called Threadcount. It is a total knockout at the price point for this style of wine. It’s a big voluptuous wine and very fruit forward. The nose is straight up dark chocolate dipped raspberries and it tastes of fresh-baked blueberry pie, spice, and a touch of toffee. It’s the kind of quality blend that you’ve come to expect from the family behind Caymus.
