When it comes to finding home-run deals in Napa Valley reds, we all should have a load of faith in my friend, Chad. His “Chad Plan” calls for wineries to bottle their new wines in “shiners”. Wine bottled without label or branded cork. For many wineries with bloated inventories, this gives them an out when current markets aren’t providing one. Chad offers a price on the entire lot that is substantially higher than the depressed bulk market but still dramatically less the intended retail.
Chad bottles these “shiners” under his own label, talks about vineyard sources and how the wine is made but doesn’t mention the winery’s name. The Chad label is all about opportunity; the opportunity for wineries to get out of stuck product without cheapening their brand and the opportunity of a lifetime for consumers to buy fantastic American wine at everyday prices.
His latest release is the 2018 Napa Valley Proprietary Red Wine. This Cabernet-based blend, a rich, teeth-staining wine, which delivers way more power, fruit and finish than any other $25 Napa Valley red that I have tasted all year. It features aromas and flavors of black currant, plum, mocha and cigar box, leading to a packed middle core of black fruit. The ’18 Chad Prop Red displays the concentration and length generally found in bottles twice its price (that’s because what’s in the bottle IS twice the price!).
This is a no-brainer choice to be your house Cab as long as supply lasts. I’m sure Chad will find another opportunity but this is a special wine. Don’t miss it.

The new release is here from outstanding winemaking team of Michel Rolland, Charles Thomas, Andy Erickson and David Jelenik. This one always represents one of the best quality-to-price ratios in all of Napa Cab and in the stellar 2021 vintage, this really stands out as one of the best the Valley has to offer. It’s a racy mix of Coombsville fruit from Atlas Peak that absolutely roars out of the bottle. Always one of Napa’s great bargains and a must have even as the price starts to sneak up here a little bit.

“The 2020 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is truly sensational. It begins with striking aromas of fresh blackberries, blueberries and dark plums that are laced with fresh spring florals, mocha, sweet exotic spices, graphite and gravel nuances all taking shape. The palate is full-bodied and displays a remarkable combination of power and elegance throughout. This is beautifully structured and extremely expressive, as it possesses outstanding depth and concentration all they way through the long, finessed finish. Year after year, the Columbia Valley Cabernet is one of the most impressive wines, and there is no exception here, as it combines all the wonderful qualities of the 2020 vintage from Quilceda Creek into one expression. This is fantastic already and readers will be in for a real treat, as this simply marvelous wine will continue to deliver the goods for years to come.”

Since the late 1990’s Penner-Ash has been viewed as one of Oregon’s top wineries making gorgeous wines in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. In the 2021 vintage considered to be one of Oregon’s all-time great years, the 2021 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir that Lynn crafted is gorgeous, a silky tightly woven number that mixes red and black fruits with some sage and baking spices and a savory finish. It’s got some nice weight to it and structure which suggests it’ll age well for the next 10-15 years though it’s already drinking beautifully in its youth.

Feudo Montoni has been one of the best producers in Italy for literally hundreds of years, most notably for their work with Nero D’Avola grape in Sicily. It’s a gorgeous expression at such a good price. The 2020 “Lagnusa” is the perfect pizza or Thanksgiving wine with juicy black fruits, grippy tannins and a wonderful, fresh and herbaceous finish. Vinous Media gave the wine 92 points and raved, calling it “remarkably fresh yet long, leaving the mouth watering while still resonating on hints of blackberry.” You’re going to love this.
