Cerbaia is a tiny estate, just 12 acres. The vines were planted in the ’70s on northeast facing parcels, rooted in the famous Montosoli calcareous soil. Elena Pellagrini’s time at the estate just started in 2013. Her dad farmed the vines and made the wine for the 35 years prior but Elena is determined to raise the bar her father set. She told me that the farming hasn’t really changed at all; they’ve always worked without chemicals. But the yield is lower and the winemaking, while traditional in technique, is spotlessly clean with modern equipment.
2019 will be the next classic in a line of great Montalcino vintages, with the power and fruit of 2007 or 15 with the structure and aromatic complexity of 2010 or 16. Cerbaia’s Rosso ‘19 is expressive and elegant with the lifted aromatic profile only possible when sourced from high elevation vineyards rooted in mineral soil. In the mouth, it shows juicy, bright red berries with savory elements of sage, sweet tobacco and anise. An almost perfect vintage makes this Rosso hard to resist in its youth, but it has the bones to mature gracefully in a proper cellar for 5-7 years.

2017 Rosso is wildly aromatic, with bright red berries in the mouth with just the right amount of Tuscan rusticity. Just spectacular fruit makes this Rosso hard to resist young but it will definitely improve in a proper cellar for 5-7 years.

Since the late 1990’s Penner-Ash has been viewed as one of Oregon’s top wineries making gorgeous wines in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. In the 2021 vintage considered to be one of Oregon’s all-time great years, the 2021 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir that Lynn crafted is gorgeous, a silky tightly woven number that mixes red and black fruits with some sage and baking spices and a savory finish. It’s got some nice weight to it and structure which suggests it’ll age well for the next 10-15 years though it’s already drinking beautifully in its youth.
91 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.

Avignonesi’s wines took Nicholas Wines by storm last year with their ‘Grifi’ SuperTuscan, a highly rated, highly delicious bottle that put the winery firmly on my radar. It’s a great bottle of wine, but at this price – it completely overdelivers which is exactly what you’re looking for.
This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.
