2017 Catena Malbec Mendoza in half-size bottles! Perfect for a single sitting or when you want a glass or two of red with dinner. Better yet, this super fresh, berried up, elegant Malbec is made from arguably the best producer of the grape in the entire world. $11.10 per 375ml or the crazy good $9.90 per bottle when you load up on a case of these babies. Great for gifts– both for friends and for yourself.
To say 2017 was a good vintage at Bodega Catena Zapata would be understatement with their top Malbec getting a perfect 100 point score (and price tag) and then a few months after their release, they are named the #1 Wine Brand in the entire world by Drinks International. They are understandably flying high in Mendoza!
I was thrilled to be getting a call from these guys and though it’s a tad bit unconventional, a sub $10, 93-point half bottle gem from arguably the world’s best Malbec producer is an offer I was never going to pass up. This one is not too shabby for a Tuesday nighter. But like all wines we’ve ‘rescued’ from restaurant wine lists, this one won’t last long. Load up!

93 Points, James Suckling
This is a dense and refined red with a minerality underneath. Full body, firm and silky with pretty blue fruit and light salt undertones. Shows tension and structure.
91 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
I compared the 2016 with the 2017 Catena Malbec, one of their most popular bottlings. Even though the vintage was not as cool as 2016, the wine keeps great freshness and elegance and is very harmonious, with integrated oak and focused flavors.

95 Points (Gold Medal), 2022 Decanter Wine Awards
The expert reviews on this incredible new release from Herve Fabre are insane. 90 points and a ‘Best Buy’ designate from Wine Enthusiast, 90 more from Suckling. Ditto from Vinous who called this “young, firm, with well-worked tannins and good structure”. But in a crowded see of nearly 20,000 wines at the Decanter Wine Awards in 2022 – this stole the show. The only 95-point, Gold medal Cabernet that you can get for under $20/bottle, its second straight year in the most rarified air.
93 Points, James Suckling
Avignonesi’s wines took Nicholas Wines by storm last year with their ‘Grifi’ SuperTuscan, a highly rated, highly delicious bottle that put the winery firmly on my radar. It’s a great bottle of wine, but at this price – it completely overdelivers which is exactly what you’re looking for.
#24 Wine of the Year (2022), Wine Spectator
92 Points, Wine Spectator – 91 Points, James Suckling
“This supple red shows a core of cherry and plum fruit allied to olive, juniper and tobacco notes. Delivers well-integrated tannins and acidic structure, lingering nicely on the finish.”
96 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate – 96 Points, Decanter
96 Points from Robert Parker himself along with extremely high praise. “The wine hits all cylinders in 2010.” This is one the great Margaux wines of the vintage. Probably the greatest Lascombes made to date…” Add in 10 years of aging with perfect provenance and you have our top Bordeaux offer of the year. A third of the price of Palmer and a mere tenth of Château Margaux – $139 per bottle & free shipping on 2. You’ll want two.
